The great Roman General Maximus (Russell Crowe) has once again led the legions to victory on the battlefield. The war won, Maximus dreams of home, wanting only to return to his wife and son; however, the dying Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) has one more duty for the general - to assume the mantle of his power.
Jealous of Maximus' favor with the emperor, the heir to the throne, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), orders his execution - and that of his family. Barely escaping death, Maximus is forced into slavery and trained as a gladiator in the arena where his fame grows.
Now he has come to Rome, intent on avenging the murder of his wife and son by killing the new emperor; Commodus....

Firstly the Steel Box is superb, if your'e more into your film collection than just an average 'watcher'.
I played this film 'back to back' with my Collectors Edition DVD version, and the Blu Ray transfer is well worth the money! My DVD player is a 700 quid Denon (8 years ago), and I've just bought a bog standard Sony BDP360 player and they are now below 100 quid! Both played through a DTS 5.1 System into a Sony KDLW5710 40" LCD. The fight scenes run much smoother in 1080p 24fps as you'd expect. The shadow detail in BD reveals things the standard DVD just can't show. The sound track is also of Epic quality. I would whole heartidly recommend this Blu Ray, after all in my opinion, Gladiator is one of the iconic epic movies of our time.
You have heard a lot from critics who can do nothing but complain. The picture quality is brilliant on my 55" Sony Bravia.
As for the sound, I have never sat in the coliseum in Rome until now, the DTS-HD MASTER AUDIO is awesome. Dont be put off and add this to your collection now, you wont regret it and for the ones who complain, buy a better system.
First the picture is brilliant im using a 52" sony bravia and its perfect .
As for the sound its pure DEMO material the DTS HD MASTER AUDIO rocks
Excellent quality, awesome sound, yes but there are some scenes where you do wonder is it 1080p, but comparing with the dvd it has a vast improvement, well if you are an avid fan of gladiator like me then please buy it, ofcouse if you can afford it.....
This transfer is not as bad as many have stated. Yes it has some edge enhancement and DNR and, if you watch frame by frame, I am sure the missing detail might be noticed...but on a 40 inch display it's still vastly superior to DVD.
Is it perfect? No, but it's not the worst transfer in Blu-ray history as some would have you believe. Picture quality 3 out of 5 stars. Audio is 4.5 out of 5. Overall package gets 4 stars.
Summary: Not perfect but MUCH better than upconverted DVD.
