Terminator is back! Set in a post-apocalyptic 2018, this fourth instalment of the saga stars Christian Bale as John Connor, humanity's last hope in the war against the machines. From visionary director McG, this is one adrenaline-pumping thrill ride that no sci-fi fan should be without!

The End Begins Now

The year is 2018. Judgment Day has come and gone. At the behest of Skynet, an army of Terminators roams the wastelands killing or collecting humans. The only hope for the survival of humanity is Resistance fighter John Connor: a man whose destiny has always been intertwined with the fate of human existence. As the future of the world teeters on the brink of the future John has been warned about his whole life, something totally new shakes his belief that mankind stands a chance against the machines: the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a man from the past whose last memory is of being on death row before awakening in this post-apocalyptic nightmare. In the face of an ever-adapting Skynet, John must decide whether Marcus can be trusted as he prepares to face the enemy head-on.

Play.com Review

Director McG's Terminator Salvation sees Hollywood superstar Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) step into the post-apocalyptic shoes of John Connor. Terminator Salvation breathes new life into the series, welcoming Tim Burton's favourite composer Danny Elfman (Batman), Bryce Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3) as Kate Connor - replacing Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines' Claire Danes - and hotly-tipped Australian newcomer Sam Worthington (Avatar) in the role of Marcus Wright. As with the prequels, the film features plenty of terrifying additions to Skynet's arsenal including the Harvester, Mototerminators and T-600s, but it's the chance to see the first film set after Judgement Day that really appeals.

Terminator Salvation is a rollicking chase movie with spectacular action - the escape from the giant robot Harvester is a particular highlight. Meanwhile, the dilapidated deserts of California and the LA-based Skynet - a dark lair of pipes, pumps, gun turrets and factories - provide a fascinating backdrop for the future war. With strong support from Moon Bloodgood and Anton Yelchin - channelling Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese - Christian Bale lends John Connor A-list authority, whilst being totally believable in the action scenes - especially when he meets an old foe towards the end of the movie (you'll have to watch to find out!). However, the real star of the show is Sam Worthington as Marcus. Sporting the good looks and understated charisma of a classic matinee idol, we cannot wait to see Worthington in Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day director James Cameron's Avatar. Ultimately, though, it's the characters that make Terminator Salvation standout from the slew of event movies, remaining true to the spirit of the series - characters you actually care about.

Top 100 DVD Reviewer

Every time I write a review with less than 4 stars people mark it as unhelpful, lets see if this one can buck the trend and be rated objectively.

I can sum this film up in one word - McG.

McG directed this film and it shows, his prior claims to fame are directing Charlie's Angels 1 and 2. How that qualified him to direct this film I have no idea but obviously someone decided he would be perfect, he wasn't. I know that Bay and Abrams were busy doing Transformers 2 and Start Trek XI, but surely there was another action-film director they could have chosen!

All of the improbable stunts that are spread throughout the CA films are here, it is impossible to immerse yourself in a film when the laws of physics are so blatantly ignored. The actors are all absolutely amazing shots (single hit kills with a grenade launcher, one handed from a speeding vehicle!) while the 'machines' have got Stormtrooper syndrome (unable to hit a barn door at 5 meters with a gatling cannon). Huge explosions have a blast radius of about 1 metre and the human body can be thrown, crushed, stabbed, shot, blown-up and still walk away.

Cliche's abound in this film, I won't reel off the extensive list; just wonder why the 'bad-humans' are inbred hill-billies 'lookie what we found!' when they see a woman. Why are random fires dotted around deserted cities, in the rain, flaming barrels, flaming cushions and flaming debris. Is there some pyromaniac wondering all the cities setting fire to everything they can see?
I could go on but won't as I am sure you are getting the picture.

For every 1 good scene there were 2 bad, cliched, contrived scenes more reminiscent of a bad student movie than a hollywood blockbuster. The script was so bad that not even Christian Bale, (a superb action-actor) could do anything with it.

Plus Points...
* It has kept the Terminator franchise going
* It has hopefully ended McG's career sparing us from more of his abortions
* Michael Ironside
* Good SFX (ILM were busy this year!)

Bad Points...
* Cliches abound
* Contrived scenes and sub-plots
* Lack of realism & disregard for the laws of physics
* Very poor story

So why 3 stars?
It is a loud, fast paced action film. A visual and audio fanfare that for mere sensory impact has great potential. Unfortunately for all the reasons above it is not a great film.

Do I blame McG? Yes. He is now second on my hated directors list after George Lucas.

Do I blame the writers? Yes. John D. Brancato & Michael Ferris. These two are responsible for such tripe as 'The Net' and 'Catwoman'.

----
It should be noted that the Director's cut has more violence and a bit of boob that the theatrical release didnt, apart from that there is not a huge difference between versions.

 Different, but Better than I was Expecting.

Did we need another Terminator movie, not really.
Did we need the director of Charlie's Angels directing a new Terminator movie. No.
But when Christian Bale signed on, I felt a little better about the whole thing.
As it turns out, Terminator Salvation is a Modern Sci Fi Movie, with bits of the Terminator legend thrown in.
Some people say that it would have been better not to have seen the Judgement Day aftermath, and that it was better left to the viewers Imagination.
This is a valid point, but now that the movie is here, it does a pretty good job of showing the Resistance fighting the Machines.
This new Movie about the Terminator world brings the story Full Circle.
The performances By Christian Bale and Sam Worthington are both Spot On.
The Apocalyptic setting, was well designed, and reminded me a little of Mad Max and the landscape of The Book of Eli
The highlight of the movie for me though was the Stunning Action Sequences, which were blended in with Exquisite Special Effects.
Especially loved the Machine Motorbikes. Anyways, a good watch, especially for Terminator fans
I guess the best way to enjoy this film is to set realistic expectations, About time we understand that any Terminator movie without James Cameron, and now without Arnie, is never gonna be as good as the First 2 movies. Except it and enjoy Terminator Salvation for what it is.

 not quite ARNIE's films but still good in it's own right!

I was very,vert skeptical when i first heard this film was being made and i refused to even go and see it in the cinemas when it it was released in 2009 and i thought to myself i will wait to hear the critics views..i purchased the DVD in 2010 and i was blown-away how good the film really was-even tho arnie was'n't in the film!(apart from the T-800 model which was suppossed to be him)..i wanted to purchase the BLURAY version but it was way too expensive till play.com had for 2 for 18 and i jumped at the chance recently to get it on bluray,aswell as the previous DVD version:Was i dispointed?-no way!!-the pic quality and sound beat the DVD version hands-down and i was impressed so much better than my previous DVD i had purchased in early 2010..i am now looking foward to watching TERMINATOR 5 as my action hero Arold Schwarzenegger is suppossed to be in it this time round??-even if it's a 'cameo' role,it is a welcome movie in my opinion...he is in the Expendables and that looks amazing!!

 "..BRILLIANT SCI-FI.."

It would appear that Christian Bale can do no wrong, every role he takes on is amazing, and he not only saved Batman, now he has saved Terminator! He proves once again he is one of the greatest actors of our time as he takes on the future filled with killing machines, the story is great, the visual effects are breathtaking and there is a good supporting cast, I love the introduction to the T-800 as we see a likeness of Schwarzenegger take on Conner! Overall theres nothing more to say but buy it, its another sci-fi gem and just as classic as the original terminator films!

 Best Terminator movie

Good art direction, nice grain/color posterize effect, great cast, superb sound/visual effects and a couple of tense moments that give this movie much more interest than what Arnold Schwarznegger did for the past films. There is one particular moment that WILL blow you away from your sofa, provided that you didn't know about it previously.

This movie has been severely underrated, as well as it's official game, which I strongly recommend you to play with the help of a motivated mate.
