A thoroughly enjoyable gangster film. One of the best in recent times I'd say. The acting is brilliant from everybody, especially Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. The Blu Ray quality is exceptional and the special features are interesting. Another piece of Michael Mann's work I love!

for the film, not the blu Ray!

This movie was excellent, I watched it with a group of my friends all in our 30s, we all loved the action and drama and agreed it was a great gangster movie.

The acting is excellent and the production itself including the direction is amazing. I love every moment of this film. It went bang from the beginning to the end.

The best way to view this film though is on DVD for half the price of the Blu Ray which to be honest looked terrible.

Great film, great acting, great direction. There is nothing about the film not to like.

 'Public Enemy Number 1'

I absolutely agree with the other reviewer who commented that this is Micheal Mann's best film since 'Heat'. Can't honestly see why others have knocked points off for PQ? On the contrary, this BD is exemplary in every department. It is pristine, sharp & detailed - skin-tones are spot on, blacks are rich & deep & there isn't a hint of grain that I could see on my Samsung 46" LED tv. Period detail of the 1930's is captured beautifully & the DTS HD MA rocks. It is lovingly directed & will keep you hooked from the opening scene with outstanding performances and a superb transfer. Don't hesitate to pick this up & add it to your collection. Highly Recommended...

 Mann does it again

Public Enemies is the best gangster movie I have seen since Carlitos Way. Johnny Depp is finally cast in a role that does him justice & the story, while not historically accurate keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

The transfer as mentioned in some other reviews is quite inconsistent, being crystal clear in places & grainy in others. Sound hoever is great, especially during the gunfights, which are up there with that bank heist shoot out in Mann's other crime masterpiece Heat.

I feel for Christian Bale in this movie as the bulk of the story centre's on Depp's John Dillinger & Bale is never given the chance to make any sort of mark on the role, which is a shame for such an accomplished actor.

Overall great film, but Heat is still the one to beat.
That rhymes & you know it!

Great film - re-watchable too - worth the purchase

First off let me say that the only other biographical film i had seen was Ali - which i thought was terrible - so i was a little apprehensive at first about watching this, thinking that it would be a huge waste of time. However, i enjoyed this film beginning to end.
Johnny Depp was brilliant as usual. Bale was good too although i thought his accent sounded a little off in places - not enough to spoil the film though. The action sequences were well shot and the plot was good too.
The picture, i thought, was great - exactly what i'd expect from Blu-Ray. I can kind of see what people are refering to with the 'grainy' effect - but i didn't really notice it at all and i think this can sometimes add to a film - especially one set in the past.
All in all i was glad to have watched it and i will probably watch it again - which is always a sign of a good film. The extras were very interesting too - well worth watching unlike some others i've seen.

 Great movie. Awful blu-ray.

Now, when I buy a blu-ray film, I expect to get a good picture. I'm afraid that this is not the case with this film. Occasionally there are some fantastic looking shots that really (excuse the cliche term) pop out from the screen. Unfortunately, however, the majority of the film is full of grain. So much so that it completely ruins the film and resembles, what I feel to be, worse than VHS quality. Whether this is due to the conversion or actual footage taken for the movie, I do not know. However I strongly reccommend that you consider the DVD option, even if there is little price difference.

As for the film, it is very good. The story is fairly simple to follow and there are some brilliant action scenes that will blow you away. I have very little negative criticism for the acting and, although some seem to have some issues with it, the sound quality for me was absolutely fine.

In short, this is a great movie that has the potential of being truly beautiful (and in some instances it is) but it simply falls short of the mark when it comes to image quality. I know that I am not the only one who has felt this as many forums have told me and so, as much as this goes against what i usually believe, I would have to say get it on DVD.

 Great entertainment

Really enjoyed this Movie in Blu ray. I thought that the picture quality was a little inconsistent. Interior shots sometimes not having as much clarity as exterior ones. That said, some outdoor scenes really "popped" from the screen, and the Tommy gun "fire" really cracked through the audio. Well worth the purchase for the Movie and extras.
