The original 1974 film that redefined film horror. It tells the story of a group of friends who take a road trip and find themselves at the mercy of a depraved Texas clan, among them one of the icons of horror, the chain saw wielding 'Leatherface'. To this day The Texas Chain Saw Massacre remains one of the most terrifying and disturbing films ever made.

This Blu-ray is excellent. The movie itself is a bit grainy, but that's because it was shot on 16mm in 1973! With that said, I seriously doubt that this film have ever looked better, even when it was fresh out of the lab. And the extras? You get everything, including two different commentary tracks and the 75 minute documentary THE SHOCKING TRUTH.
This IS the "seriously ultimate edition"
Great movie, great presentation.

 Horror classic

Note: This movie looks rough not because the blu-ray is a poor upgrade but because thats the nature of the movie itself. Blu-ray is set up to present movies in thier most authentic theatrical state, that said Texas chainsaw looks dog rough because it was made on a shoe string budget. The DVD edition isn't too different from the blu ray upgrade, but for this price it's worth picking up for the shead load of extras and the slight improvment of video quality.

 The original and best!

Banned for many years in the UK, it's as if this movie was so far ahead of its time that the world was not quite ready for it.

Empire heralds this as the purest horror movie ever made and I wholly agree with that sentiment. The budget or rather the lack of, presented many limitations to what was possible in the way of effects and set pieces but this actually serves as a benefit. It never dwells on the situation, leaving much to the imagination and this is what makes this film as important as it is powerful. At no point does the movie give you a slow build or a prolonged feeling of tension, it goes straight for the jugular with some of the most powerful horror imagery ever.

From the opening 2-3 minutes you are instantly put at a feeling of unease with flashes of decomposing bodies accompanied by a jarring soundtrack and searing screeches. Those familiar with horror will of seen the opening half hour many times over, the group of young adults who unwittingly stumble into a world of the macabre, but you will never of seen it displayed so vividly.

Horror like any other genre evolves over time but this movie hits a home run with all the fundamental basics. Countless remakes and many times copied but never bettered.

Essential viewing.

The transfer...................

Second Sight have granted this feature with an MPEG-4 AVC encoded, 1:78.1 framed, 1080p transfer onto a 50GB Blu-ray disc of very natural appearance.

This was never going to rival the best of HD transfers, but that isn't to say that it is bad. Colours are more vibrant than previous DVD presentations and certain scenes definitely benefit from the increased resolution.

The image is not as sharp as most Blu-rays but this is owed largely to the source elements and limited production budgets. The image appears grimy but this suits the setting perfectly and adds a certain realness to the proceedings. Some print damage is also visible with occasional scratches and speckles.

Skin tones appear accurate for the most part and pale in others.

Blacks and darks are surprisingly inky and never take on a dark grey appearance. Some crush is evident but this is minimal. Film grain is plentiful but again this compliments the movies tone.

Thankfully no digital enhancements have been made, this is a very natural looking transfer. We suffer no compression issues or digital artifacting.

I would definitely recommend this over the DVD equivalent.
