as we all know how good this film is, my star rating and review are for the blu-ray transfer. playing this, i was really disappointed just how poor the picture is. i then played the normal dvd, and the upgraded picture was a massive improvement - so much so, i would definetly say the upgraded version is far better than the blu-ray!
What's the point in packing your film with an amazing cast and giving them absolutely nothing to do? So, while hunky Harry Hamlin down on earth has all sorts of mythological adventures as Perseus, the big names stand around on Mount Olympus and, well, just stand there. Designed mainly as a showcase for Ray Harryhausen's quaint little plasticene creature effects (his Medusa holds up the best), the leaps in FX technology over the intervening years have rendered this rather redundant. And the addition of the so-called comedy mechanical owl/ R2D2 substitute only serves to date it even more.
This is a five star movie and was my childhood favourite, but unfortunately I've taken a couple of stars off due to the poor function of the blu ray. There was a sad lack of special features and the disc was controlled the exact same way as a normal DVD. Although I and many other people will buy this on blu ray to add to their collection, for thos who are not too fussed about that i would recomend buying the movie on DVD.
I remember being fascinated by this film when I saw it as a child I thought it was fantastic, And even now despite all these years I still enjoy the magic of this film.
Based loosely on the Greek mythology of Perseus and the story of his battle to win the hand of the beautiful Andromeda who is cursed by the Greek goddess Thetis who is seeking her revenge against Zeus for what he did to her son.
The main talking point of this film is the superb special effects provided by Ray Harryhausen and his old style stop motion effect creatures these were done in the days before CGI effects were around and I for one think they add a certain charm to this film.
The film is slightly slow to get going but once the film picks up pace and the legendary Greek monsters are added to the action the film moves along nicely of all the creatures that Harryhausen created for this film I personally think the scene with the Boatman and Medusa are the best ones in the film all the other creatures including the monstrous Kracken and the beastman Calibos are superbly done by Harryhausen as well with the stop motion effects he used.
This is a really enjoyable Greek mythology tale that takes you on the adventure of a lifetime.
It will be interesting to see the remake with Sam Worthington to compare what 29 years can do with new special effects and all but this original Harryhausen stop motion masterpiece will forever hold a place in my heart.
To slick67 are you watching Clash on a PS3? I only ask as the prview is before the menu set up and my brother has noticed on other blu-rays that the adverts etc before the official menu do not always play on his PS3, its just a shame you can not access this from the special features, Getting back to the film picture quality not as brilliant as you expect from Blu-rays including old classics but even saying that I have found some scenes are outstanding, still an excellent film to own and a lot better than either the VHS or old DVD versions.
