This movie is often billed as Britain's Gran Torino and I can see why. However, I beleive that is simply damning it with faint praise as to this is a much more beleiveable premise. There's no tough guy who strikes fear into cowardly gan members here. It's very tough, very darkm and oh so British in it's delivery.
Acting is excellent throughout and it's good to see Caine act a part that truly reflects his age. When he's on sceen you can't take your eyes off him. The supporting cast are equally as good and this is definitely one for the true film lover. Anyone expecting a cheap death wish rip-off should not attend. The characters are fleshed out in fine detail and you get to know them well. It reflects a reality of life in Britain in the naughties like no other movie before it.
This is without doubt the British movie of the year and to me the stand out movie of 2009 Forget CGI and special effects, this takes us back to what movie making is all about. A very good story exceptionally well told.
