He was imprisoned 27 years for his heroic fight against apartheid. So what does Nelson Mandela do after he is elected president of South Africa? He rejects revenge, forgives his oppressors and finds hope of national unity in an unlikely place: the rugby field.

Clint Eastwood powerfully directs an uplifting film about a team and a people inspired to greatness. In a performance that won him NBR's Best Actor Award and an Oscar nomination, Morgan Freeman portrays Mandela, who asks the national rugby team captain (Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Matt Damon) and his underdog squad to do the impossible and win the World Cup.

One team, one country. The universal language of sports has never spoken so thrillingly as in Eastwood's Invictus.

Was looking forward to this movie when announced, but by the time it had been and gone at the cinema I had lost my enthusiasm for it.
Which is kinda odd considering it is Directed by Clint Eastwood who is on an awesome streak at the moment and starring Morgan Freeman in a dream role alongside Matt Damon, who is surely one of the Best Actors of his generation.
Having watched the movie, it was probably as good as it could have been.
It didnt leave me fully satisfied, but at the same time I cant think of anything else they could have different, unless they went down a road showing hardcore racial injustices of the time, or made up Hollywood laced grandstanding speeches, that were not made in real life. But I think the rugby match could have been made a little more exciting.
Overall the film captures a moment of Sports and Political History in a Nice and Simple way.

 'truly inspiring'

'clint eastwood' rarely delivers disappointment within the films he directs....this film i can assure you does not 'buck' the trend.
the film starts with 'nelson mandela's' release after '30' years imprisonment and of his rise to president.
however, how does he convince a nation to unite,he sets out to intergrate both white and black in his new goverment.
but many problems lie ahead, the white population are suspicous, and many of the black population are less than equall.
the national 'rugby' team are primarily supported by the white population, the opposition are usually cheered on by the black comunity.
so much division, 'nelson mandela' see's an opening that might get the whole country backing the national team during the world-cup, the team do have a habit of losing however.
'nelson mandela' makes it a priority to befriend the 'rugby' captain and get to know the team by name.
this is a brilliantly up-lifting movie, and has obviously been researched to offer authenticity.
'morgan freeman' one of todays most respected actor's gives a convincing performance of the man who has the courage to forgive those who done him wrong.
'matt damon' an inspiring role as the 'spring-bok' captain who's team along with the presidents support helped unite that which had been divided---a nation.
clint eastwood' has probably directed another 'classic in waiting'

 Quality Filmmaking But Slightly Disappointing.

Invictus (2009) is a sports drama starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Oscar winner Clint Eastwood directs.

As you would expect from a movie involving Freeman, Damon and Eastwood, this is quality filmmaking. Freeman gives a spot on performance as Nelson Mandela and although slightly wasted Damon is worthy support.

My only problem with this movie is that I was slightly disappointed that so much time was spent on rugby. I personally would have preferred more time spent telling the story of Mandela's life.

I mean you have a compelling subject like the life of Mandela, perfect casting in a great actor like Freeman and a legendary director like Eastwood. What a waste that this movie is primarily just a cliched sports movie. Surely Mandela deserves more?

I would love to see Freeman and Eastwood have another go, this time focusing more on Mandela's life. Anyway that said I did enjoy Invictus even though I'm not particularly interested in rugby. Its high quality filmmaking from very talented people.

 Stunning Mr Eastwood

Brilliantly done, got two of the best actors around in my opinion Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as the south african rugby captain Francois Pienaar. See through the eyes of these two people as South Africa deals with racisim, political judgement and poverty. See how the nation is bought together under on flag through the art of rugby. Clint Eastwood shows this in a beautiful filming. Hope for another film of this quality form this man. Brilliant!!!!

 One of the best films

I watched this film in the cinema and was greatly impressed by no-one rustling popcorn, everyone was just glued to the screen.
I cant think of a better film i have watched in recent years.
Well done Clint Eastwood, Morgan freeman and Matt Damon as well as all the other actors for creating such a awsome film.
If you like rugby then this is a must, i cant wait for play to deliver my blueray version so i can wear out my blueray player watching this over and over again.
