First things first, this is set at about the same time as dawn of the dead, and straight after diary of the dead. The film as you will read from the summery is about to Irish familys living on an island with very diffrent views on how to deal with the dead. George still knows how to make a zombie film interesting dispite this being film number 6, and I did enjoy watching it, although some of the special effects arent wonderfull, and sometime the script is off kilter. But overall very enjoyable, well thought out and hopefully there will be another film in the pipeline soon. With regards to the blu ray both sound and picture are very good as you would expect with a new release, but unforuntly there isn't any special features at all! which seems like a real missed oppertunity to see some of the development of the film.
I've been a zombie movie fan for a loooong time, especially loving Romero films. I'lve loved every single one of the dead movies even though there's been a slight decline in quality. Even though none of the newer films reach the quality of the original trilogy (even Day of the Dead is an undying classic) they still maintain a strong feeling that I can relate to. Survival of the dead is definitely an improvement over Diary and keeps up a strong story with a few minor surprises. There are slight misunderstandings on my part because I don't always understand spoken english, being Finnish myself, but overall the language isn't a slightest problem.
Nevertheless, Survival of the Dead isn't as great as the older films in feeling, but it still holds it's rightful place in the Dead universe. A must buy for all zombie fans, and Romero fans.
By the way, I expected the cgi to annoy the heck out of me, but I was surprised how decently it fit into the wholeness of the film. And that's saying a lot from a guy who hates cgi gore over make up gore.
George A. Romero has a bit of a running theme going with his zombie movies and a certain standard that everybody expects him to keep up! Although I was hoping for the best for this film I was a slight bit let down in the fact Romero uses too much CGI in the slaying of his zombies! Over all the film is very enjoyable, the story is ok, just as average as land of the dead, better than diary of the dead. You certainly have allot of fun with this film as there is plenty of zombies being blown away all the time! The CGI lets it down a little as its rather obvious in places but there are allot of good practical effects too! Shame there wasnt allot of variety in the way they were killed though as most of the time its a shot to the head! The cast is good, by the end of the film it goes slightly in a new direction but not by much, I think George A. Romero will always be better remembered for dawn and day of the dead. Worth checking out if you love horror, plenty of gore and lots of fun still. The picture quality is ok, but there is NO special features!!
Bought this because I am a fan of zombie films and it's a good price for a blu-ray. I enjoyed the film and don't understand why it gets so many bad reviews. Plenty of Zombies been shot up and some funny scenes.
Writer/director George A Romero is the daddy of zombie movies. Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985) are classic movies.
Romero returned to the genre with the decidedly average Land of the Dead (2005) and then seemed to lose the plot entirely with the very disappointing Diary of the Dead (2007).
Survival Of The Dead (2009) is the latest installment and its a definate improvement on Diary but sadly its not a patch on the early movies.
The main problem is that Romero seems to be more interested in telling a story about the tensions between local residents on an island. The Zombies are almost given a back seat and the old classic Romero survival situations are sadly missing.
The cast consists of unknown actors and they are not particulary good. The special effects are good except for the computer animated stuff which looks cheap and nasty on blu-ray.
Survival Of The Dead is an improvement on Diary Of The Dead but sadly it doesn't get close to the classic trilogy and I would rate it alongside the mediocre Land Of The Dead.
Romero has many fans who are hoping for the master to return to form but considering he's now turned 70 thats looking increasingly unlikely. Romero appears to have lost his touch and these new movies are beginning to taint the genius of the first ones.
