Based on a myth, Brotherhood of the Wolf sees gifted and handsome biologist Gregoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan) travel to a remote part of South West France to investigate a series of brutal slayings - according to local lore perpetrated by a mysterious lupine beast.

Accompanied by his Native American sidekick Mani (Mark Dacascos), Gregoire soon realises the "beast" has been trained to kill, and the list of possible suspects could include mysterious prostitute Sylvia (Monica Bellucci), aristocratic big game hunter Jean-Francois (Vincent Cassel) or his beautiful sister (Emilie Dequenne) and any number of the aggrieved local gentry...

 Amazing movie!!

I saw this movie years ago, but loved it from the beginning... It took a little getting used to the French, but after 10 minutes, you don't think about it... I was lucky enough to see it on an HD channel a while ago and it's just beautiful - definitely worth buying on bluray!

The fact that it's based on true events, just makes it even more interesting, and since it takes place in France, it would have been completely wrong to have it be in English...

I highly recommend anyone to see it - a perfect mix of love, sex, friendship, hate, and violence...

Christophe Gans 2001 production Brotherhood of the Wolf is finally given its U.K. Blu-ray release in 2011 but unlike its French counter-part from 2008 which is still the best version available on Blu-ray, the British version is the shorter cut of the film (139 minutes) the preferred version is the 151 minute Directors cut from France.

The good news is that this region B 50gb disc comes encoded using MPEG-4 AVG in full 1080p resolution with French DTS Master audio 5.1 with a full set of English subtitles that appear inside the picture frame and are of a decent size and font, there is also a English dubbed version in DTS master audio 5.1 both soundtracks also come in 2 track DTS master audio, comparing this to the 2002 copy on DVD the Blu-ray is better in terms of richer colours and deeper blacks and a soundtrack which is re-born in all departments, clearer music more satisfying sound effects and more defied dialogue, the only extra is 77minute behind the scenes documentary, the DVD release had the original theatrical trailer and 17 minute interview which is called The Brotherhood of the Wolf The Legend with Michel Louis who wrote the Book about The Beast of Gevaudan which some of this story is based on.
I have taken one star off because this is not the Directors cut.

Now to look for that French version on-line...

lavish production, costumes, scenery etc etc.... great fight scenes too,but...just something missing. and ploughed through this long film for a fairly disappointing ending. i really wouldnt bother.

 A fabulous film experience

This has got to be my all-time favourite period horror film. The story, acting, filming and directing are all superb. If you're not normally keen on subtitles, please make a special effort with this one, it will be well worthwhile. It's perfect in the original French, and over-dubbing with English would simply have ruined it. I am so looking forward to getting the BD version. Enjoy!
