Play.com Review

Following in the ghoulish footsteps of 'found footage' classics The Blair Witch Project and Rec, Paranormal Activity is the latest low-budget ultra scare-fest to wow Hollywood! Made for just $15,000 in director Oren Peli's very own home, this unique indie cross between The Exorcist and Poltergeist has left cinema audiences in a perpetual state of terror.

Filmed in a documentary style, Paranormal Activity follows day-trader Micah and college student Katie, a young couple "Engaged to be engaged." Played by unknowns Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston, the leads are wholly sympathetic and normal characters living out a seemingly mundane suburban existence, which is part of the movie's genius - many of us could be them, minus the paranormal activity! When Micah takes it upon himself to film Katie's claims that she has been haunted since childhood, audiences will likely be just as sceptical as he is, but not for long... Sleep is going to be a problem.

Not beyond some good old-fashioned scares - strange noises and things that go bump in the night - the film takes all the classics and the cliches of the genre, but roots them in a reality that audiences can relate to - nearly everyone has seen or experienced something unexplainable on some level. But what do you do when the unexplainable keeps on happening?

You really will feel like you're watching genuine hauntings of these poor unfortunate souls, but - as with all great horror movies - it's what you don't see that really sets the imagination racing. That such terror was achieved on a micro budget is a testament to the filmmaker - few like-minded films have been as successful, Blair Witch being one exception.

For optimum frights, we recommend you leave the lights off if you can bear it. Whatever you do, make sure you order in some new underwear because you're going to need them, and if DreamWorks and Steven Spielberg have anything to do with it you might have to buy a few pairs because sequels are on the way.

For more 'found footage' terrors, we recommend you check out:

The low budget horror that reignited the genre, The Blair Witch Project
Spanish horror film Rec or Hollywood remake Quarantine
The one that started it all, Cannibal Holocaust
Zombie master George A. Romero's Diary Of The Dead
The big budget monster movie Cloverfield

Prepare for a sleepless night after watching this

I saw this film without knowing anyrhing about it. I thought it was well acted, great story and I could not work out if it was based on a true story or not. Whether it is or not, this film will leave you with a sleepless night. I had wierd dreams that very night after i had watched it during the day and felt like I had been awake all night. I love a good horror but this is freaky cause it could be true if u believe in the after life. One of the best films i have seen this year.

 A proper scare fest

People who are saying Paranormal Activity is NOT scary clearly made the choice not to get into the spirit of the movie (pun intended).

This is a super low-budget horror flick, but what it does well is capture the emotions of the two leading actors during the moments of the demon's nightly activities.

Sure, you can laugh your way through it, but put yourself in the minds of either Katie or Micah and you'll find the movie preying on your mind for days after.

A decidedly shocking psychological horror movie that is well deserved of the 'hype' it received.

 Physcological Genius

This film is an absolute work of genius in my opinion. From the way it builds up the 'scares' to the phenomenal climax could not have been bettered. I just love the way the two characters work off each other. They are just everyday decent people that something horrible is happening to and they cannot get away from. They continue to live through this situation and you are on that journey with them. I do not get scared by horrors I think that i have seen too many to allow that now !! But if you really let yourself be taken in by this film and immerse yourself as the director intended you are in for a real treat, you really do feel for these people and it is that pity that makes this film a true horror. Granted there are a few moments that will have you jumping but that is due to the brilliant sound track. Don't believe the review stating that this is all hype. Shut the curtains, turn off the lights and turn up the sound. This is a stunning movie that I feel goes down as an absolute horror classic of all time.

i've got to say from the out-set that i am not a fan of 'home' video style movies having previously seen the terrible camera-work on films such as 'cloverfield' and 'the blair witch project'.....however because of the 'hype' i felt like many of you i'm sure...it has to be watched, so you can judge for yourself.
this film was made a couple of years ago, but has only recently gone out on general release.
it is available on line, but it is 'region' 'a'
is this the scariest flick this year ?.........not really.
what's the acting like ? ...................umm....not the best in truth
camera-work ? .....well, other than cutting peoples heads off now and then, it's a whole lot better than the other movies mentioned.
the first two-thirds of the film is pretty slow, yes it has the odd happening now and then, but, really....the film only picks up toward and including the closing scenes, even then i'd struggle to call it genuinly 'scary'
however...the film was made for 'peanuts' and 'fair play' it's earned tens of millions in revenue.
it's not available to buy until late 'march' and many of you that haven't allready seen it will probably want to.......i would advise watching it before you commit to buy.

Wow what a scary film. It has been a long time since I have seen a film that has freaked me out as much as this one. Just like the Blair Witch Project a decade earlier, Paranomal Activity takes unknown actors & puts them in front of a video camera & lets them play havoc with your imagination. Basically if you loved Blair Witch, you will enjoy this even more. If not, it is still worth seeing. 5 stars & one the best films of 2009!!!
