THE GENIUS THAT IS CHRISTOPHER NOLAN

| | See all casscastillo's reviews (32)

Christopher Nolan is a genius. This was meant to be a 'small film' he was meant to write and direct in between The Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises and it's far from 'small'. Inception is magnificient, with an underrated cast that is Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cottilard, Tom Hardy and Ellen Page - everyone taking part is brilliant and I wouldn't have a better cast in that movie. It's not boring, not for a second and leaves the audience tensed the entire time. It's great, and definitely one of the best films of 2010.

Fantastic story told beautifully by Nolan

Such an intelligent and well thought out script. Some are sketpical about the huge budget for this film but just because it has a lot of money doesn't mean the film is bad. Effects from Double Negative have really raised the bar and were amazing, don't say they weren't, they were! 5 stars in all aspects for this film, just try and concentrate throughout!

This is one of the best films of 2010, and in my all time top 10. Reasons? It's an amazing movie, with great sfx, a really intriguing story, edge of your seat moments and the thought that dreams are cool... if you can control them...

Mind bendingly entertaining, a perfect fit of intelligent, emotional story telling, and special effects that are actually special, and not just dull CGI that your eyes sense aren't real.

Great Special effects - Poor film

Really disappointed by this film, the trailers were great.
I found the concept interesting but the plot boring, why would I care about all this elaborate mind messing just to change a corporate decision ?? I'm afraid it was a great technical display of CGI but as a film it fails.

  All is dream!

The actual plot is very simple, an attempt to plant an idea inside the mind via dreams. You can take this film at face value, look no further and still be satisfied with the ending. Or you can try to unfold the various layers of interwoven story telling and really dissect this masterpiece. Yes it takes much concentration but if that is going to be a problem, buy something else! However, if you enjoy a brilliantly written script, solid acting and award winning musical scores (Hans Zimmer) then this latest film by Nolan is for you. It comes across as a natural step up from Memento (a previous film) but at the same time using all the modern production methods, special effects and outstanding cast to a high degree. This was the best film of its genre that I saw in 2010 and if you are looking for something special, something more than your average beer and peanuts flick, then I recommend you buy! There is an assumption that Nolan is being pompous with his latest release but this is not the case, there will always be conflict with that which is not blazingly obvious. Look out the reception Twin Peaks received when Lynch stepped outside the box and even the Lost series to a certain extent. All in all, a roller coaster ride from start to finish that you will want to see over and over. I see Inception as Nolans mantelpiece film, I only hope there is not a sequel!

  The bar has been raised......

This film is now the yardstick that all "summer blockbusters" should be judged with.
A truly intelligent, thought provoking and entertaining action film that is as watchable when nothings happening as it is when everything is happening.
Another triple A movie under Dicaprio's belt.

  Christopher Nolan is forgiven...

After The Dark Knight, I lost all liking for Christopher Nolan (The Prestige). But this film has definatley got him back in my good books.
In order to understand everything that went on, I actually had to watch the film twice, because the first time i was just so confused as to what was going on.
The concept behind Inception is simply brilliant, even eerie to a large extent. It had a generally dark theme with a lighter aspect also, which contrasted well with the script.
I think the certificate of this film should be a 15 due to the complex plotline and narrative involved.
You may also develop a slight crush on Ellen Page.
To wrap up with one simple sentence:
You will think twice before going to sleep...

  A dream within a dream within a dream...within a dream.

| | See all Leviticus's reviews (17)

I have read several reviews below saying that it is hard to work out what is going on. So here is a quick guide with the absolute minimum of spoilers:

It is the near future, there is a new (addictive) technology whereby an electronic box combined with a few cables can connect people together in a hyper real seeming dream.

Cobb (Dicaprio) is an industrial thief who specialises in stealing trade secrets via invading peoples dreams along with his partner Arthur (Gordon-Levitt).

The rules of the dreams are simple. Dream time runs ten times faster than real time, and if you die you wake up.
One person creates the layout of the dream (Cobb likes to use architects for this as they can create new buildings in their imagination most accuratley), another creates the dream itself and populates it with 'projections' from their subconscious.

The subject can thus have their subconscious raided for information.

Into this Saito approaches Cobb to do a job for him, in return for which he will sort out some legal problems that will allow Cobb to return to the US and thus see his children. The problem is that it isn't a raid to get information, it is to insert an idea- an inception.

Inceptions are believed to be impossible, but Cobb knows better. Inceptions are dangerous and have to be subtle. Inserting an idea without it seeming too ridiculous so that the conscious mind automatically rejects it does not just require a dream inside a dream (a common raid tactic) but a dream inside that as well.
Going to a 3rd level requires the use of sedatives, and those sedatives prevent you waking from the dream if you die in it, and thus you're mind will instead be thrown into a deeper continuing dream reality until the sedative wears off or you can be awakened from within it. In other words, with the ten times time rule, your mind could be trapped for the equivalent of decades or more and you could be psychologically damaged or even die of 'old age' as a result.

Desperate to see his children again, Cobb accepts the job.
With only new recruit, architect Ariadne, having an inkling that Cobb's mind holds deep dark secrets that could threaten them all the question is what exactly is that secret, and will they make it out of their target Fischer's dream world or be caught in dream limbo and lost forever?

Blu Ray picture quality is excellent. Sound was good- though I can't fit a surround sound system in my room at the moment to be able to definitively review that aspect of the disk.

Took me 'til about the 1 hour mark to work out exactly what was going on and predict the end. And no- that ending was NOT a set up for a sequel- so don't expect one any more than you should expect a sequel to Memento!
