Provocative, compelling and underscored with hard-hitting action, this pulse-pounding thriller explodes with tension, and delivers a career-defining performance from international action-superstar, Jackie Chan.

Hundreds of Chinese refugees wash up on Japan's Wakasa Bay. Each has a dream of a better life, but most will encounter only prejudice and oppression. One, a law-abiding farm-worker known as Steelhead (Jackie Chan), has come to find the woman he has loved since childhood (Xu Jinglei), but his quest ends in bitter rejection, when he discovers she has married Yakuza underboss, Eguchi (Masaya Kato).

Heartbroken, his life descends into darkness, and petty crime quickly escalates to murder. With blood on his hands, he will risk everything to secure a future for his people, as they face an increasingly brutal onslaught from a criminal empire protected by a secret code. However, ancient traditions will not be broken, and his defiance will lead to all-out war, as both factions fight for control of the infamous Shinjuku district in the heart of Japan's greatest city.

Ultimately pursued by forces on both sides of the law, he must fight for redemption and the survival of those he loves in the darkest night he has ever known...

Something a little different from Jackie Chan

I was very impressed with this film. I love Jackie Chan for his excellent martial arts skills and the mind blowing action which you usually associate him with but lets face it, he's in his 50s now & can't continue that forever, I personally would like to see him survive and also I don't think I'd like seeing him use stunt doubles and special effects, to me that's just not who he is. That said, it was great to see him in such a different role in The Shinjuku Incident. There is very little fighting from Jackie here & instead we see him get a chance the act & he does it very well indeed. His character is believable and some scenes really surprised me. This is a great improvement on what he's doing in Hollywood right now, although films like The Spy Next Door are entertaining they're also cheesy, its not good to see someone like Jackie go to waste on these films & portrayed as some sort of children's entertainer! So, if you're a fan of Jackie and you appreciate the fact that he wants to move on from action then you'll be most impressed. He's given enough of himself to martial arts/action films over the years already, lets see what else he can do. Buy it!

An change of pace for Jackie Chan

Despite cultivating family audiences with his fluffier Hollywood output, Jackie Chan does a 180 degree turn as an oppressed Chinese immigrant fighting to survive and protect his fellow countrymen who're trying to make a new life in the crime ridden underbelly of Shinjuku, Tokyo.

While he doesn't play a bad guy per se, his character certainly has liquid morals as he slowly rises to lead a new gang, rivaling the local Yakuza operation. The film is occasionally bleak and a million miles away from the knockabout comedy and snappy one liners of Rush Hour and it's ilk.

A must see for Jackie Chan fans with longer memories and lovers of gritty crime films.
