Good film... What happened with the transfer

Seriously...? Really...?
What happened in the transfer to Blu-ray it's really no better than watching an upscaled DVD... The whites are too bright and cause most daytime scenes to have a white Ready Brek glow around the characters... It's really grainy too.
I would of thought and hoped it would be much better than this.

Ignore every review except this one...

This film was made to look this. The overblown whites are put there digitally to give the film it's "look".
For those "reviewers" here that don't know, grain is present on all film stock - some more than others - if you don't want to see grain, then stick to Pixar movies...

Spielberg goes through phases of style in his film making - normally 3 at a time. This, Minority Report and AI:Artificial Inteligence were all made in this same style.

 Good film but lacks effort

The film is good in places, but what lets this blu-ray edition down the most is the lack of effort that seems to be evident here.

I'm not sure if the Director (Steven Speilberg) intended the film to have a grainy theme to it but it isn't the sort of film that benefits from such effects. So all it boils down to is the lack of effort that the producers of this BD have decided to invest. Where this film has been let down visually that can't be said for the sound quality, it sounds o.k. on a 5.1 surround sound system, although nothing special.

A word to the wise, when considering purchasing this remember, that in terms of effort 'War of the Worlds' is no 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'.

Watched this at the cinema and was a bit disappointed a with this Cruise/Speilberg effort after having seen the ir first collaboration, the Stunning Minority Report. I was particularly dissapointed with some of the Special Effects, which seemed incomplete,.But caught it again on the T.V the other nite and the Movie is Pretty good, almost non stop, Action, Twists, and some Scary Thrills. Only downside was the cheesy ending.
Cruise is good but Dakota Fanning who plays his daughter steals the show.

 BRILLIANTLY STRUCTURED FILM

I'm also looking forward to this Blu-ray release. This is one of the reasons why Spielberg is a master at what he does. It was brave of him to structure this from one man's point of view and for me it adds so much to the story. If he'd done it from an 'Independence Day' style perspective I'm sure it would have been good in its own way, but how many of those kind of films have we seen? For me the reasoning behind his decision to film it like that can be summed up in one scene, when Cruise and family are holed up in the house basement and there's the terrifying sound of something going on outside. We as an audience are right there with them experiencing it in the same way, terror and confusion as to what is happening. When they emerge to find the real reason behind the sounds it's a shocking revelation for us as it is for them. Brilliant stuff.
