Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis star in this sci-fi action thriller. 30 years after an unspecified environmental disaster, a lone man, Eli (Washington), fights his way across the desolate wasteland of a post-apocalyptic America guarding a sacred book called the Book of Eli, which holds the secrets that can bring civilisation back from the brink of destruction and save humankind. His principal threat is despotic town leader Carnegie (Oldman), who will stop at nothing to get hold of the book and use its secrets to take control of society.

 Extremely impressive and surprisingly action-filled

First of all, this film is heavily pro-christianity. Not in a preachy way, but in a way that makes it clear the filmakers are saying "this is my opinion, it's out there. Deal with it." If that's likely to offend you, this isn't the film for you. However, it makes for an interesting mcGuffin as the thing the bad guys want instead of the usual 'computer disk' or 'oil source', and the directors are smart enough to make us question many times whether Denzel's Eli is an obsessive and deluded or not. The film is unexpectedly action filled, with Eli a surprisingly lethal and efficient survivor. As previously mentioned here, the film's visual style appears to be very heavily influenced by the computer game Fallout 3 - although it's far from the only post-apocalypse thriller to have a very similar visual style and setting. This is a good thing, as it makes for a very believable, wholly realised world, with the many beautiful shots of the devastated landscape and settlements filmed in a very clear and slightly colour de-saturated style that makes them amazing on blu-ray. Gary Oldman makes for a well played wrinkles and all believable monster who is trying to corrupt something good to his own needs. The ending, while it feels slightly forced, is also satisfying and quite naturalistic. The filming style is one of the most impressive I've seen in a long while, with the Hughes brothers making great use of silence, especially in the creepy fallout-laden opening, to emphasise man's relative absence from the world. Overall, it's a derivative but beautifully filmed and very well acted action thriller with ferocious fights, and the feeling of a fully realised world in which Eli is a tiny piece. The Hughes Brothers' have always made films where their opinions are blatantly clear, and this one is no different. It's what helps them stand out in a good way. A great action thriller with heart.

Definately has the post apocolyptic 'postman' 'Fallout' and 'Mad-Max' vibe, from the scenery to the characters and the situations presented on-screen. The combat sequences are so well choreagraphed and fast that they take your breath away.

Then there's the plot/storyline....I wont go into any detail but there's the 'sixth-sense' twist that spins your opinion on it's head and makes you want to watch the film from the start again. Those reviewers that didnt like the film obviously missed the twist....

Are your hands shaking yet?.......(stop biting your nails...)

 Great Survival Film!

This for me was a very enjoyable film. If like me you like postapocalyptic stuff,'The Book of Eli' is definately a film for you.

Obviously if you dont like this sort of fim then dont go for this.

Very good twists, action packed and thoroughly watchable.

Recommend 4/5

Awseome action film with a good Christian message

Before I say anything else, yes I'm a Christian and yes that perhaps makes me bias here. The fact is, if you are easily offended by anything with a religious edge to it, then give this a miss.

This film has a blatently pro-Christian, bible message to it and about how society needs the word of God to survive. If that is going to frustrate you... its maybe not for you.

Religion aside, you also have a good action flick, with nice fight scenes and some impressive CGI and slick camera work. Although at times, you feel like you are watching an MTV music video, but thats forgiveable.

But anyway... religion, the bible and christianity are at the forefront of this film and I would say it does a good job of promoting God and showing that while some people will abuse his word, others are simply out to make the world better.

 "..GOOD FILM.."

I wasnt sure if I would like this movie at first but after watching it, it was allot better than I thought it would be, the story is certainly original and it plays out rather well with all the actors doing a good job, but overall once you find out the twist at the end, it wont be worth a second viewing, as clever as it is you wont feel satisfied that the movie really achieved anything but the clever ending, I say clever but really its ultimately far fetched. Great film to watch once, you wont want to go back to it time and time again.
