In a nice twist, the film commences in a world where humans are the rarity, and vampires rule the earth, with nice elements like a subway for walking in daylight, and cars modified for shielding them from the sun. Unfortunately for them, they've fed too much on the humans and if a blood substitute isn't found they'll starve. That's the beginning, and the rest of the film makes great mileage out of Sam Neill's ghoulish corporation head, and Ethan Hawke's teetotal scientist. There are few surprises in the characters' roles, but they're played with more than usual conviction, and some of the fight scenes are truly standout, including an unusually inventive car chase, and a great final battle. Gorehounds might be slightly disappointed - there's almost no gore, until a peculiar tonal shift near the climax when the directors decide to absolutely soak us in the stuff, which is surprisingly effective because of the sparseness that's gone before. While the ending hints at a possible sequel, I didn't mind. If you enjoyed Blade and Resident Evil, you're likely to enjoy this.
