They trained him to kill for their pleasure... But they trained him a little too well...

This presentation of the powerful film classic features an additional five minutes cut from the films original release, plus the original overture and extended soundtrack.

Director Stanley Kubrick tells the tale of Spartacus (Kirk Douglas), the bold gladiator slave, and Varinia (Jean Simmons), the woman who believed in his cause. Challenged by the power-hungry General Crassus (Laurence Olivier), Spartacus is forced to face his convictions and the power of the Roman Empire at it's glorious height.

The inspirational account of one man's eternal struggle for freedom, Spartacus combines history with spectacle to create a moving drama of love and commitment.

 Classic Movie But Lacks Extras.

Spartacus (1960) is a classic historical epic starring Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton and Peter Ustinov.

Stanley Kubrick (A Clockwork Orange) was only 32 when he was hired onto this movie as a last minute replacement director but his work here is of a master craftsman.

The film looks sumptuous on blu-ray with Kubricks eye for cinematography and detail brilliantly highlighted. The battle scenes all done with real people have never looked better.

My only problem with this blu-ray is that it lacks a few of the extras found on the Special Edition DVD. The commentary by Douglas, Ustinov and others is a particularly big loss.

Forget the HORRID HDDVD version of a few years ago.

I have the American Blu-ray version of this release and for those who were unfortunate to purchase the HDDVD version you will be pleased to know that the picture quality on this release is excellent. After the terrible HDDVD release I was in two minds about buying the Blu-ray version, luckily I took the plunge as I love this movie. I am not going to waste everyones time by reviewing the film as those who will buy this will have seen it endless times on TV, Video or DVD. For those worried it is the re-released extended version.
Colours are rich and vibrant the picture is amazing for a film this old, I highly recommend buying this version. The Extras are almost on par with the criterion release of a few years ago.

 Often duplicated, never bettered.

The picture and sound are absolutely superb, As for the extra's, it's not going to have a lot, I think It has enough.(for an old movie) The movie itself feature's stunning scenery, a brilliant cast and superb acting.

Excellent picture quality, excellent musical score and generally a brilliant film. Definitely worth the money, despite the questionable fight scenes by today's standards!
