  Spiky thriller

| | See all RJNeb2's reviews (703)

Lengthy but engrossing Swedish murder mystery takes its time delving into a convoluted and slightly sick serial killer plot. However, its real attraction is not who did it and why, or the crusading journalist attempting to exonerate his reputation, but who helps him: the eponymous computer hacker. A leather-clad, chain-smoking, pierced, tattooed introvert with some deep-seated anger issues, this is one startling character and a fascinating one to watch.

Involving and well made grown up thriller!

I haven't read the books so far (as ever, on a very long 'to do' list that's lying around) but in film terms this adaption of the first book in the trilogy certainly stands on it's own as a fine and engrossing thriller for adults.

While the core story is the investigation into the disappearance 40 years earlier of 16 year old Harriet Vanger by journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the mysterious Lisbeth Salander who ultimately aids him there are also several other strands of story that unfold over the film's lengthy (though it rarely feels like it) running time of two and a half hours.

The mystery at the heart is well serviced by being one which doesn't descend into illogical resolutions when the payoff comes, and the violent themes that recur through the film become a part of the story rather than fancy additions just to get some controversy stirred. Some of the side plots (particularly the corporate scandal that forms part of Blomkvist's character's story and the flashbacks with the younger Lisbeth) are either less detailed or less immediately clear than probably they are in the book, I would guess, but I think the essence of them probably comes through just enough.

The performances are well judged and the isolated, wintry and well photographed Swedish settings add to the atmosphere and environment of the film.

I certainly will seek out the next two films in the story from this point onwards to see what happens in them, but even as a stand alone film, Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is definitely the real deal amongst adult thrillers.

  Awesome!!!

This movie is simply awesome...really worth your time!! Excellent characters, great acting, can't believe someone actually had the gumption to give it two stars because the leading male wasn't that good looking. Genius!

  A must see

Very good thriller with excellent acting from everyone but Noomi Rapace steals the show for me with a brilliant performance. The rape scene is not for the faint hearted however.
Would I like to have seen more of the book in the film? of course but only so much can be included and any omissions do not detract from the film

  Very disappointing

After reading the book I was dieing to watch the movie and see the characters come to life. The movie does no justice to the characters that Stieg Larsson built up so much in the books. The lead male role is supposed to be a bit handsome but the actor in the movie had nothing attractive about him at all. And as for lisbeth, she is supposed to be strangly attractive, oh no the movie made her look terrible nothing remotely nice about her.

As for the content of the movie, the rape scean was unnecessarily long, the sceans moved too quickly and almost out of sync.
The storyline was changed from the book in some places, such as where Blomkvist found out the bible references. The book stated his daughter told him about the bible references, but the movie totally changes that and shows Lisbeth as the finder of the bible references.
It annoyed me so much I turned it off after an hour and a half with the feeling of regret for buying it in the first place.

The dubbing was about the only positive thing in the movie.

Lets hope Hollywood will do a better job of doing Steig Larsson justice.

  What about the extended versions?

I've read the book and seen the film, both of which are excellent and Noomi Rapace is utterly brilliant; its impossible to catch in the film all the detail that's in the book but it would help if the extended versions, as originally shown on Swedish television ( 3 hours long ) were available in this country, as they are in Sweden and some other European countries. Anybody know if they are going to be released later this year, perhaps in a box set of all three films? That I would pre order!

  The English version is excellent

You can watch this excellent film with either the Swedish soundtrack and subtitles are with the dubbed English version.

As someone who spent most of his life working with sound can thoroughly recommend the latter.

THE BEST THING TO COME OUT OF SWEDEN SINCE ABBA!

Don't be put off by the fact that this brilliant thriller is subtitled as you will be missing one of the best films of 2010. As a added bonus if you go to the set up feature you can watch the film with a very well dubbed English audio.
The film is bases on the best selling trilogy of books about Lisbeth Salander with a very bleak past and a disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist as they have to unite and solve a case of a missing girl. The mis-smatched duo form a brillianty edgy alliance as they dig into the past and unravel a dark and appalling secret.
This is a complex mystery, but credit should go to both leads as Noomi Rapace ( soon to be seen in Sherlock Holmes 2 and Ridley Scott's planned Alien Prequel) gives a brilliantly edgy performance as Lizbeth that shows that she will become Hollywood's next hot property. Michael Nyquist as Mikael is great as the journalist and gives a strong performance. The film slowly grips as the clues mount up and by the final reverlations the movie is utterly compelling.
The movie lives up to the hype and now Hollywood plan on a pointless English speaking version, but the good news is that David (Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac) Fincher is to direct.
This is a truly gripping and electifing thriller from the start all the way to he breathless finish.
