Steven Spielberg's World War 2 epic comes to blu-ray for the first time with crystal clear picture and spectacular surround sound. Join Tom Hanks, Matt Damon and Vin Diesel as they battle their way through war-torn France... this is Saving Private Ryan as you have never seen it before!

Seen through the eyes of a squad of American soldiers, the story begins with World War II's historic D-Day invasion, then moves beyond the beach as the men embark on a dangerous special mission. Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) must take his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat. Faced with impossible odds, the men question their orders. Why are eight men risking their lives to save just one? Surrounded by the brutal realities of war, each man searches for his own answer - and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honour, decency and courage.

 Not good blu-ray material

Saving Private Ryan is one of my all time favorite movies, but as a blu-ray release it fails to deliver. The reason is of course director Spielberg and cinematographer Kaminskis artistic choices.

The picture is constantly dark, grainy and bleak with washed out colors to give the movie a realistic war atmosphere. Unfortunately these factors leave you with the feeling of watching a standard dvd release.

A true classic movie but not made for the classic blu-ray moments.

 Doh!

Kristiansen, Blu-ray isnt about making a picture as clean as possible with DNR, its about giving you the BEST presentation of the movie as intended by the makers. Aka Saving Private Ryan on BD, which look grainy, as it is SUPPOSED to look.....

 Superb Conversion

Having read some of the reviews here I almost didn't get the film. How pleased I am that I went with my own instinct and ignored them. You have to remember the film was shot to look grainy for effect. I think the picture quality is far superior than the standard DVD and the sound quality from the remastered DTS HD MasterAudio is stunning as you would expect from a film of this pedigree. I look for improvement over the original and this conversion delivers.

 audio's the winner here

The video quality on private ryan is grainy at times(much like black hawk down)this is how these films are meant to look in order to add realism to the war scenes so that doesn't bother me but the real winner is the audio and the dts hd master soundtrack on a home cinema system will have the neighbours ducking for cover.
