A little guilt goes a long way...

Having not slept for a year, lathe operator Trevor Reznick (Christian Bale - The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Batman Begins) is dying of insomnia. Why he can't sleep, he can't remember. His every waking minute has become an unrelenting nightmare of confusion, paranoia, guilt, anxiety and terror; each of which is part of an escalating series of clues that will lead him to the source of his mysterious affliction...

Method actor Christian Bale, who favours total immersion in the roles he plays, lost an astonishing 63 pounds from his already lean frame in order to convey the shockingly gaunt physique of the main character. Exhausting in his preparation, close to the point of permanent physical damage, Bale is the centrepoint of this extraordinary film.

 An interesting film

This film is kind of a specialist one. Its not to everyones taste I would imagine, but It is in my opinion very good. I would class the genre as a psychological mystery with elements of creepyness! Its really brought to life with blu-ray and it really does emphasise the whole look of the film which is important but you'll have to watch it to understand what I mean.

 A bit skinny

There's dedication to your job and then there's Christian Bale dedication to your job, dropping an extraordinary 63lbs to play an insomniac slowly coming apart at the seams. Although the film is supposed to be unsettling - it isn't particularly - what is unnerving is just how skeletal the actor has made himself, just part of the huge investment he puts in to his character. Barcelona doubles up quite convincingly for an American city, while the film itself sports an intriguing air of dislocation. Just a shame the mystery itself isn't too mysterious.

This is a must own film. The method acting which Bale attributes to this is amazing. Its a dark film with regards to the story and the acting and overall film is typical of the excellent effort that Bale puts in. He lost around 4 stone I believe to get into the role of Trevor Reznik who is suffering from disturbing insomnia. I cant say no more as it will spoil the viewing pleasure. But this is a must for anyone who enjoys top quality acting!!
