Executive produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman, The Pacific is an epic ten-part miniseries from HBO and the team that made Band of Brothers.

The Pacific tracks the intertwined real-life stories of three U.S Marines, Robert Leckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theater during World War 2. The miniseries follows these men and their fellow Marines from their first battle with the Japanese on Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima and through the horror of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day.

The Pacific is primarily based on two memoirs of US Marines, Eugene Sledge's With The Old Breed: At Peleliu And Okinawa and Robert Leckie's Helmet For My Pillow. The series also draws on Eugene Sledge's China Marine and Chuck Tatum's Red Blood, Black Sand, as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers.

 My Personal Opinion

Having watched the Blu-ray discs (what a marathon!), as well as catching it on television when it came out, I have to say that it was enjoyable, but different to Band of Brothers in a good way. I thought that the picture was on the whole sharp (although there were times where it was not a rock steady and clear as I would expect), and the sound immense with a wonderfully taut sound field. Good acting and great scenes - if you have BofB, get this as well.

 Gripping, Violent and Stunning

This mini TV series is the most realistic and intense depictions of the battle of the Pacific during World War II you can see.

If you have watched Band Of Brothers, then you'll know what to expect. Its fairly similar in that each episode concentrates on a specific character or group of characters as they try to cope with the harsh and inevitable realities that made the Pacific battles some of the most violent and harsh in the War.

Every War scene is shot with extreme attention to detail and theres so much chaos and violence going on at times that you sometimes become disorientated just watching it. This is a good thing though as it actually feels like your in the scenes. The setting is off course stunning at times with war raging on in tropical islands showing how the weather can affect soldiers on these uninhabited places.

Be warned though, some scene are hard to watch as the war ravages on and I wouldn't recommend this if your more of a Casablanca type of person. I didn't think it was quite as gripping or memorable as Band Of Brothres, mainly because BoB had characters that were more likeable and charasmatic. But this series follows closely behind as one of the best watches out there for depictions of World War II.

 Excellent !

If you thought Band of Brothers was good then you should find this experience just as involving.
Suggest you watch Disc 6 first which gives the background and interviews with the Vets and the effort made to recreate the whole thing as accurately as possible.
The BluRay Sound and Picture quality is what you would expect from such a professional production. First Rate !

Probably the Best Value Blu Ray you can buy.

 Fantastic - Buy it now!

Having loved Band of Brothers, I couldn't wait for this to come out. I didn't have Sky movies when it was on TV so the wait was even more agonising!

As previous reviews have stated this is quite different to Band of Brothers, but in a good way. The stories told through each character gives you a different perspective from hardened veterans to new recruits straight out of boot camp living through the horrors of war.

The battle scenes are fantastic (along with the rest of it), and if you watch this in DTS-HD sound you will be blown away. The picture quality is also amazing. Very crisp and great colours.

Buy it. You won't be disappointed!
