This film was totally not what i was expecting and for this same very reason, a lot of people panned it. As an avid film fan - especially horror - i don't often find myself surprised and having no idea where this film is going, whereas watching this film I really was surprised because I expected an average run of the mill jumpy rip-off of the classics.
The ending will definitely divide viewers BUT If you want something different, seek this out. That said, I wouldn't pay more than ten pounds but it's a good little film that isn't scared to be different. A lot of people are also associating this with The Exorcist, but it has nothing to do with it and isn't a remake like I've heard one or two people misconstrue.
The reason for the 2 star average on here is because of a mislead audience. From the trailers people expected a pure horror film.. This is a faux documentary exploring whether a possession was real or purely psychological, and you won't know until the very end. Says a lot for the acting. It is a debate of science vs superstition. The priest is a genuinely interesting character. The ending was damn clear, whether you liked it or not. There is no vague ending. It was quick, surprising and made you feel unsafe. The film was intelligent, and used some great trickery in how it is filmed. They did a lot with a hand held camera. Actually much better than most standard horrors, with more blood and "shocks" the film would have been received well. This is a psychological thriller. I think the main problem is not with this film but a misguided audience. If you are looking for the next "Saw" or "The Grudge" look elsewhere, and please don't compare to The Exorcist, they are totally different films, each with a different purpose.
The last Exorcism is a film that will be loved and hated in equel measure and I full appreciate both sides.
Shot on a tiny budget and the now common Blair Witch / Paranormal Activity style Docufilm. The film is a very effective if slightly frustrating chiller. The stoy set up about a well known preacher who sets out to prove that Demonic Possession and the act of Excorcism is a scam, but slowly realises that other darker forces are at work. The actual set up is great as we come across Ashley Bell a normal moody sixteen year old who has mood swings, performs strange acts and then says she knows nothing of it..... just like any teenager!
So instead of phoneing the Jeremy Kyle show to sort out her problems it's down to the preacher with a faith problem.
The acting is great and the film is darkly funny and presses the right buttons between sly chuckles, and chills up the spine. There is also a great twist where the possessed is found to be pregnant, and that cast's even more doubt on her claims that Demons are controlling her soul. All this leads up to a supposed chilling climax of biblical proportions....... well actually it's a copout and turns into the Wickerman or Witch Finder General and goes against what had been expertly set up before. it's a shame as the rest of the film is very good.
It's cheap and don't go expecting The Exorcist and if you lower your expectations it's a damn good chiller with great extra features that produce some chilling facts. It may be all Bilble bashing B.S but it's a hell of alot of spooky fun while it last's
