At the dawn of the new millennium, Japan is in a state of near-collapse. Unemployment is at an all-time high, and violence amongst the nation's youth is spiralling out of control. With school children boycotting their lessons and physically abusing their teachers, a beleagured and near-defeated government decides to introduce a radical new measure: the Battle Royale Act.

Overseen by a former teacher, (Takeshi Kitano), and requiring that a randomly chosen school class be taken to a deserted island and forced to fight each other to the death, the Act dictates that only one pupil be allowed to survive the punishment. He or she will return, not as the victor, but as the ultimate proof of the lengths to which the government are prepared to go to curb the tide of juvenile disobediance.

One of the most controversial films of all time, clever, creepy and ultra-violent, Battle Royale is the jewel in the crown of Japanese Shock Cinema.

This is indeed one of the best Japanese movies ever made and certainly one of the most famous and well loved Japanese films that you always here about! A very well made movie about a class of school kids all thrown on an island to play for a game of death as the last one standing, the cast is fantastic, the violence is amazing and shocking and overall is a classic movie and must be seen by all, this package is certainly the best for any bluray in 2010 with some amazing extras and bonus goodies that any fan could possibly want, plus the brilliant picture transfer. MUST BUY!

 A top release!

Arrow have certainly pulled out all the stops for this release.

Three discs, two versions of the superb film and a whole host of informative special features to check out - as well as some cool additional bits and pieces.

The packaging has been carefully prepared with original artwork inspired by the films featuring some of the students and various weapons...and blood. Lots of blood. The single digipaks for each disc is a nice touch as well rather than the usual fold out style boxsets.

A nice feature that appeals to most fans of any film is a limited numbered edition. This package contains a certificate with your own sets reference number.
Also included is a double-sided poster, comic book which acts as a prequel to the film, a booklet with artwork and another booklet with critical response/reviews.

The picture quality looks great and is vastly improved from the DVD version. Audio is good, although this isn't what I'd class as an audio dependent film - so can't really hear much a difference between this and my DVD copy.

The one thing I will say is keep your original DVD copy as this Blu-Ray features new translations on both versions of the film. So it is interesting to watch both versions to see the differences they made with the dialogue.

Great Blu-ray set - shame about the box

Excellent set, loads of decent extras and really good picture / sound quality. Worth the upgrade if you've only got the dvd.

Only issue I have is the box is standard DVD size and looks crap on my shelf amongst the rest of my Blu-ray collection. Shame.
