What a great film!! About the best two hours of top-notch blockbustery-ness I saw in 2009 as we go back to the future and watch the USS Enterprise and her crew assemble for the first time and begin their voyages together.
The film goes back to the very start (courtesy of some time-travel goings-on that get explained to us by a very familar face) and shows us how James T. Kirk came into the world, whilst his future closest friend Spock struggles with his own mixed heritage on Vulcan. Meanwhile, in the darkness of space, a man with only revenge on his mind plans an event so huge it will bring both men together, with the rest of the famous crew in a stupendous adventure written wonderfully and directed with absolute confidence by J.J Abrams.
Much like Iron Man, and X-Men before it, this is the origin story to pave the way for hopefully deeper stories later. As the focus is on the journey to become 'the crew' the main villian effectiveness will differ for some. It also alters some things (particularly visually) from the original series and that too may affect some people's possible entertainment. But speaking as a Trek fan for over twenty years, I have to say that despite the changes made, I'm still onboard.
Because this is such pure cinematic FUN!! It's energetic, fast paced and never gives you pause for breath. It's a blast of an experience and probably one you will want to journey on more than once! The cast is exceptional, the effects superlative and dynamic, and I can't wait for the sequel already!!
