The directorial debut of Oscar-nominated actor Casey Affleck (The Killer Inside Me), I'm Still Here is a portrayal of a tumultuous year in the life of Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line, Gladiator). With remarkable access, the documentary follows the Oscar-nominee as he announces his retirement from a successful film career in the fall of 2008 and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician. Joaquin outrageous antics feature fellow A-listers P. Diddy, Ben Stiller and a now infamous appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.

The film is a portrait of an artist at a crossroads and explores notions of courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye.

I was lucky enough to watch this film on a recent trip to the USA on a rare cinema showing. The film I watched I was told was fully uncut.I am in two minds as to know if this was all faked, some was faked, or if it was real or what?.This was Casey Affleck's first filmed venture and what a strange one in deed. The documentary/film shows Phoenix at a truly low point in his career. He says he is tired of acting and has nothing more to achieve on film and wants to be a rapper - no one is taking him serious though. It shows Phoenix taking drugs, being with a prostitute while on drugs and treating his hangers on like dirt. One of the most weirdest and most unpleasant scenes involved Phoenix being defecated on by a disgruntled so called friend. This scene is filmed in a very dark way and is difficult to see what is happening. The film left me feeling uneasy and cheated as I was unsure if I was watching the breakdown of an acting genius or I was just being taken for a ride. All in all not a film I would want to go back to but this did have some entertainment value.A bit of a guilty pleasure, at least while you are watching it.

 I Just Dont Get It.

Im Still Here (2010) is a weird film. Basically its stars Joaquin Phoenix as himself as he tries to quit acting and become a hip hop rapper.

The main problem with this movie is that its awkward and uncomfortable because it leaves the audience unsure if its a real life documentary or a piece of bizarre performance art.

Bearded and overweight Phoenix staggers and stammers around with his behaviour becoming increasingly erratic and bizarre. You find yourself hoping this is all an act. Because if its not an act this is a young man at a very low point in his life.

Phoenixs brother-in-law Casey Affleck captures every detail on film and there are cameos from Ben Stiller, Sean Combes, Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito and Bruce Willis.

I really did not get what Affleck and Phoenix were trying to do with this movie. They never let the audience discover if this is real or fake. Its just not funny and to be honest Joaquin Phoenix is one of the best young actors working today and this just feels like a complete waste of his time and talent.
