The nation awaits.

Based on King George VI's rise to the throne, Tom Hooper's Oscar-winning The King's Speech stars Colin Firth as the titular monarch on a quest to find his voice.

After the death of his father, King George V (Michael Gambon), and the scandalous abdication of King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce), Bertie (Colin Firth), who has suffered from a debilitating speech impediment all his life, is suddenly crowned King George VI of England. With his country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush).

After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a radio-address that inspires his people and unites them in battle.

Widely praised by critics, The King's Speech received 12 Academy Award nominations, winning Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director (Tom Hooper), Best Actor (Colin Firth), and Best Original Screenplay (David Seidler).

 BEWARE - this is a 1080i transfer

| | See all Fifeflyer1's reviews (2)

Buyers should be aware that this release states, on the back of the sleeve, that it is 1080i and not the normal cinematic transfer of 1080p / 24Hz. Presumably the 1080i transfer also means it is 50Hz resulting in a 4% speed increase in speed, as on PAL DVD releases. The US version indicates it is 1080p, so what are Momentum Pictures playing at? I emailed them asking why, and if there would be a re-issue at 1080p/24Hz, but you guessed, it no reply. Bad news is the US version is region locked. If enough people complain then perhaps we will see a re-issue - it happened with Gladiator.

Went to watch this as it was getting a lot of Award Season Buzz.
Found that it deserves all the praise that it is getting.
For this is truly a Brilliant Movie in every department.
Story, Acting, Direction and Production Values.
The story is very engaging right from the first scene.
It is then told in a brisk pace and laced with Wonderful Humour.
The Acting is terrific. And Award nominations are sure to follow
Colin Firth is just exceptional, and in his scenes in Public with his Stammer or excruciating to watch as any horror movie.
Geoffery Rush matches him step for step as the unorthodox Therapist. Helen Bonham Carter is good in a small role.
Guy Pearce, and Timothy Spall act their parts well.
Overall a Very Entertaining True Story

 A Royal Treat!

A fantastically well acted and thoroughly feelgood inducing dramatisation of the true story of the Duke of York - to become King George VI (Colin Firth) - and his battle to overcome his crippling stammer thanks to the unconventional methods of Australian Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) in the 1930s.

The relationship between the two men is the key thing and thanks to a commanding and sympathetic performace by Firth, who gets you right on his side from the very start of the film as we feel his palpable terror at public speaking and the support offered by Rush you spend the whole film rooting for him to succeed as events both within the Royal family and in the wider world propel him inexorably towards a life as King.

It's rare to find a film so heartfelt and enjoyable as this piece of history and I would love to see Firth win the Best Actor Oscar for his work here. Choc full of some of the best British actors out there (and special word should go to the perfect Helena Bonham Carter as George's wife playing his rock and the foundation of his world) and beautifully directed and written it's a perfect couple of hours!!

Highly recommended.

The best dramatised documentary in years

Even after many friends raved on about the film I went to see it - I have to say without any prior expectations. My motivation was in that Colin Firth rarely makes a bad film. The production was superb and the casting perfect. I have to say whilst I enjoyed the film greatly, I saw it more as a dramatised documentary than a great entertainment. Still, I film that should not be missed even if to be entertained or be viewed as a great piece of documented history.
