It takes guys as simple as the Dude and Walter to make a story this complicated... and they'd really rather be bowling.

'The Dude', Jeff Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) is unemployed and laid-back. That is until he becomes a victim of mistaken identity, two thugs breaking into his apartment in the errant belief that they are accosting Jeff Lebowski the Pasadena millionaire. In hope of getting a replacement for his soiled carpet, 'the Dude' visits his wealthy namesake and, with buddy, ex `Nam' vet., Walter Sobchak (John Goodman), he is swept into a labyrinthine comedy/thriller of extortion, embezzlement, sex, dope, German Nihilists, White Russians, mysterious cowboys, Shomer Shabbos, bowling and severed toes...

Envisaged as a hommage to the musicals of Busby Berkley, Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (adapted from Raymond Chandler's novel) and the ritual of bowling, The Big Lebowski has developed a massive cult-following with it's hilarious dialogue and quirky characters. Apparently the script was written with Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and Sam Elliott in mind... Jeff Bridges even went as far as to say he could have turned out like 'The Dude' had he not been born into the movie business... Sounds good to us!

Easily one my favourite films of all time.
Difficult to explain why, except that when you are watching the movie it just pulls you into the Lebowski world and makes you part of it.
It probably doesn't have that effect on everyone though.
Even without this element, the film boasts of a Sublime Script, Dialogues and Brilliant direction by the Coen Brothers.
And EVERY cast member delivering a Memorable performance.
But there's one man who shines above all others in this movie and that is THE DUDE himself. Jeff Bridges.
This literally is the Role he was Born top play, not sure how much acting is going on here, but it is a pure joy to watch.
The Dude will not Abide you not watching this movie. Go Get.

Where do you start in reviewing this masterpiece of cinema?

Everything the Coen's set out to achieve came back with an ace. When this only existed on paper I bet no one but the Coen brothers could have imagined how amazing it would turn out on screen.

The script is a marvel and the cast are all perfect, especially the three leads. I for one cannot decide which scene is better, they are all brilliant. If you do not understand what is so great about this movie then I fear you do not have the greatest of tastes. There is so much quality on display from all concerned.

This is one of the most quotable movies of all time. Its practically seen as a religion by its growing legion of fans. It doesn't matter if you view it from the start and watch for the entirety or just come in half way through and see just half an hour it is always entertaining.

It never seems to get dull or diminish with time, in fact it seems to get better and better with each viewing until you realise it's now easily ranked in your own top 10 movies. Which is incredible when you consider that it doesn't really follow a conventional or cohesive story line. In fact someone asked me recently what it's about and I was stumped at what to say.

This is as near to perfection as movies can get. I never tire of spending the evening with Donny, Walter and the Dude!

The transfer..................

Universal have granted this with a VC-1 encoded, 1.85:1 framed, 1080p transfer onto a 50GB Blu-ray disc of decent quality.

A marked improvement from DVD which is most certainly worth the upgrade.

Detail is good but not amazing, the image does appear softer than I would have liked although it is much sharper than DVD. The best moments are in the brightly lit bowling alley which thankfully is where most of this is set. Colour saturation is pretty good with much improved vibrancy from previous releases.

Edge enhancement has been utilised and I did detect some artifacting issues such as occasional haloing and aliasing. There were also detectable moments of crush in the night time scenes.

Grain is non existent so it would appear as though some levels of the dreaded DNR brush have been used which could go someway to explaining the softer image.

Most "Lebowski" fans will be delighted with this image, all in all it's pretty good. Could it of been better? Yes, but this is the best it's ever looked up to now.

The Digibook is a very nice touch. I feel at times that these are better than the steel books.

Extramaterial included that i havent seen before, some similar to the special edition (black cover) on dvd but definitely worth the buy for the image and sound-differences + the cover and additional all new extras. Jeff Bridges talking memories about the movie is really cool.
