The ultimate revenge film, Rolling Thunder is one of the quintessential examples of action cinema from the glorious 1970s.

After spending eight years in a Vietcong prison camp, Major Charles Rane (William Devane, 24) returns home to a small town in Texas to be greeted as a hero with a Cadillac convertible and couple thousand dollars in silver coins, one for each day of his imprisonment. Struggling to go back to his former life, Rane faces another ordeal as a gang of thugs set their sights on his cash prize...

Now living only for vengeance, he heads to Mexico to exact his own brand of justice on the fleeing crooks. Tommy Lee Jones (JFK, Batman Forever) co-stars as Rane's best friend, Johnny Vohden, who unquestioningly agrees to help Rane in his mission of revenge.

This little-seen gem was directed by John Flynn (Lock Up) and co-written by two top screenwriters, Heywood Gould (The Boys From Brazil) and Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver).

The film's title also was the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's short lived video/DVD label, Rolling Thunder Pictures.

 Overated 70s Thriller??

| | See all GWI2329's reviews (3)

This film is a 70s revenge thriller that has acquired a cult status possibly due to its long unavailbility on the home market. It has some pretentions towards the style of Sam Peckinpah, notably The Getaway. But it comes across as v dated despite interesting early performance from Tommy Lee Jones & William Devane in the main lead.
In short, its the tale of an Air Force officer returning to his texas town after 9 yrs as a vietnamese POW . Some local rednecks rob him and kill his son, and he hunts them down & takes his revenge.
The picture transfer for this bluray is fine, the sound is only mono albeit quite good.
It's the narrative that is weak, with the story going into several directions in an attempt to fill out the feature time. It's OK but don't expect to much.
