Nina (Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

 Unmissable and unforgettable

This really is one of those films where you either get it or you don't, and if you do it really is an unforgettable experience delving deep into the mind of a young ballerina striking her first major role, dealing with sexual and mental oppression, interweaving the characters in her life with those in her upcoming production of Swan Lake driving ultimately to an ending so powerful you may not be able to move for several minutes afterwards.

For me Blu-Ray is the only way to go for this film, but I won't complain at getting the DVD and digital copy at the same time!

5 star film - 3 star blu ray quality.

film - excellent, without a doubt.

Picture - very dissapointed - was grainy throughout and looks no different to the DVD version- I know some directors like the grainy look on a movie, but it takes away the expected clear blu ray quality.

Sound- excellent - a clear upgrade from DVD version.

I hope this review helps.

Usually I dont watch this type of movie but I love Natalie Portman and was willing to give it a try, you dont have to be into ballet to enjoy this, its a very deep dark erotic film with so many levels! Portman is awesome and deserves every bit of the award for this role, her performance as the white and even more the black swan is great and sucks you into her story, this is one messed up girl who will do anything to be perfect and achieve her goal, well directed and is very well paced all the way through to the shocking ending, certainly worth a watch!

a tale in which 'nina' ( natalie portman ) is consumed within the ballet 'swan lake'
obsessed by failure, oppressed by her mother, 'nina' lives out her fantisies within the story itself.
the film is intense, beautiful yet sad, and like the ballet itself tragic.
the performance by 'natalie portman' is stunning.

 Quality film!

I'm really looking forward to this being released on bluray, I took my girlfriend to see it at the cinema because I was looking to get in her good books. I thought I'd be bored but I was surprised at what a good film it actually was.
Also there is an epic scene involving Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis that is worth the price of the bluray alone.
