I was so looking forward to this release but I am left very disappointed. What is not explained is that each film is split over 2 discs(6 of the 15) to allow all the extra commentaries + what they say will allow the best picture/audio quality. Whilst I applaude the extras(2 stars) I can't help thinking if they'd have ditched the 4 commentary tracks we would have the film on one disc & not something that reminds me of when DVD first started out & you had what was called a "DVD flipper" i.e halfway through the film you had to get up & turn the disc over to watch the 2nd half of the film-this is no different. Sorry to sound so negative but for 55 pounds buyer beware.
Why are people moaning about these films being spread over two discs when the whole point of the Blu-Ray versions is about ultimate picture and sound quality!! If they were 'compressed' onto a single disc then sacrifices would have to be made! Get with it!!
OK been a fan of LoTR's for ages now and have been looking forward to this release but when i found out what was in the box my heart sank a little. I don't have an issue at all with having each film split over 2 discs, what i do have an issue with is that 6 of the discs i (and so do alot of other people) already have.
I'm talking about the 6 appendices DVD's (yes DVD's NOT Blu Rays) that are the same 6 from the old DVD Extended Edition box sets! Why are these not on Blu Ray! Can't help but think they left them on DVD to
A: cheap out on making new discs
B: bump up the disc count in the box set, coz more is better...right?
In the Alien Anthology Blu Ray they put the 4 DVD special features from the old DVD set on to 1 Blu Ray which was fine as they were not in HD. So why if they are not going to do anything new with the appendices (like have them in HD) don't they just do the same and not try to make out that theres more here than there actualy is.
So out of 15 thats only 6 Blu Rays and the other 9 are DVD's, 6 of which most LoTR fans already own.
A lot of people have expressed disappointment in this release due to the films being split over two discs each. I understand where they're coming from. I myself complained about this first, until I then realised that it's a good idea.
Yes, Blu-Ray holds a lot of memory, but with each film having two-discs, it gives even more space to make the quality even more impressive. After the Theatrical Blu-Ray release received such negative response, I believe the studio is making sure that doesn't happen again, and I agree with them.
The films: I think The Fellowship of the Ring is the best of the three, followed by The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Not to say that the other two aren't bad -- they're not! They're incredible.
The trilogy is fantastic, and I cannot wait for this release. I previously owned the Extended Editions on DVD, and they were so much better than the Theatrical Films!
As someone who has followed LOTR for some 35 years in book, radio play (CD), and then DVD, I am naturally highly excited that this is finally comiong to Blu-ray in its extended format (why aren't all films offered in DVD as extended? [HP take note]). However I have to agree with those who feel that this technology should enable viewers to watch this version from a single disc. I do really enjoy all the extra's, but not at the expense of having to pause a film (3 films actually) in the middle to put in the 2nd disc. And at 55 pounds it does leave a slightly bitter taste in the mouth. Having said all this I wouldn't miss the chance for Blu-ray extended LOTR for all the treasure in Smaug's cave!
