Titanic is a film that will always be mocked as much as it's loved, the mockers are propably the ones who shed man tears back in the cinema but will never admit to it.
2012 being the landmark 100th year since that fateful night, it seemed a perfect time to revisit the movie and to see how it stands the test of time since it's release way back on 22/01/98. The date of it's release is symbolic as it was the same date of the birth of my daughter (it's funny how things stick in the mind) The movie is a film of two halves. The first half is the love story (the ladies will love that half / not so much the men) but the second half is a story of survival of epic preportions as sandwitched between a modern day bookend.
Ok so the dialogue at times is cringe worthy, but none of it really matters as Director Cameron skillfully gives you characters you can relate and buy into, DiCaprio may look fourteen but he carries the part off well and convinces, Winslet as Rose also excells as you understand the predicament she's in and you really do root for them, but it's Billy Zane who steals the show as the biggest swine in 90's cinema, he's so hissable and his acts during the sinking are so diabolical you just love every minute he's on screen!
The sinking takes almost two hours to happen, but it really is worth the wait, this is the most gob smacking vision of any disaster, as the Titanic slowly slips under the still surf, the ship is just as much a character as any of the actors as she creaks and goans under the building pressure on her super structure. It's obvious that some of the effects have dated now, but the vast majority look as good now as they did on release. It's the scenes of the unfolding horror that hits home, as old couples kiss each other as the water laps under their bed, or the mother telling the kids a final bed time story that leave a lump in the throat of iceburg preportions, making all the matters worse is the oh so sad music playing by the ships band and the preist giving every one the last rights, I'll admit I was in tatters!
But the star of the show is" Mr Propeller man" as he falls and hit's one of the massive propellers sending him spinning to his doom. Call me sick but it is a perfect rewind moment!
But all of this could have been avoided, As it's all down to Jack and Rose... after a bit of sketching then a bit of vintage doggin. Jack and Rose decide to go up on the deck, directly under the guys in the crows nest on Iceburg watch and if Jack and Rose had not have started snogging the guys on ice watch who would have been keeping their eyes on the sea and not getting a eye full of Jack and Rose, they would have seen the Iceburg and avoided with plenty of room to spair!
But mocking aside, this is still a classic sweeping romantic film that just so happens to have some of the best action and is still a technical marvel.Even though the staircase re-union ending shouldn't work as Rose finally meets back with Jack, it somehow fits the film perfectly.
It's a breathtaking movie that although you'll probably own a copy, It will know doubt be woth upgrading to Blu Ray.
The only downside is that it contains that song by Celine Dion!

I have seen this film numerous times, saw it at the cinema several times, bought the VHS, bought the DVD and now bought the Bu-Ray, I can honestly say that this was a purchase with no regrets, the sound is crystal clear, the picture is pristine! When watching you see so much more and discover things you may have missed when the picture wasn't as defined, at one point it was like watching Titanic for the first time! Superb quality and a must have if your ready to go back to Titanic....

Not a huge fan of love stories, I was always on the fence about this film. But after watching it on blu ray the hd quality is amazing and you have to watch in awe at the direction and production, particularly the attention to detail. Overall there is no arguing that this is a great movie.
