Tom McCarthy, acclaimed writer/ director of The Visitor and The Station Agent, once again explores the depths and nuances of human relationships in his new film about the allegiances and bonds between unlikely characters in this touching comedy about disheartened attorney Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti) who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach.

On paper, this doesn't look very prepossessing at all - a sadsack lawyer sees the opportunity for some extra income by installing one of his clients in an old folks' home but is unprepared for the man's grandson showing up, looking for a place to stay. Misleadingly advertised as a sports movie (the grandson is a topnotch wrestler and yes, there is a sporting montage sequence), this is actually all about character and is filled with relatable, interesting ones at that, well played by all concerned. It's a quiet little film with modest aspirations and all the better for it.

as with most of paul giamatti's performances he quietly captures the audience in this subtle but warm comedy. a great supporting cast and a nicely rounded movie. worth seeing.
