Having written a couple of online reviews for Prometheus, i'm running low on positive adjectives.
Ridley has crafted a film of such superlative standards, that it really throws very many recent summer "blockbusters" into a rather unflattering light. Heres a film which capitalises on the ambiguities offered in Alien, but isnt interested in being just another monster movie, (wisely so because Alien is impossible to top in that respect), instead its an ideas movie.
It asks you, even forces you to consider the ideas its putting forward, who are we ?, why are we here ? and it urges you to ponder these questions by rationing out its revelations and yes, by only obliquely infererring some of its plot points.
In the age of the spoon fed narrative, Ridley Scott refuses to hand you your answers, he's urging you to read between the lines. If your watching for straight forward thrills and chills, yeah you'll get some of that, but the most rewarding payoff is in where the open ended ideas on offer here lead your imagination.
This, for me, is one of the films best aspects. I was very concerned that outright explanations of "who is the Space Jockey", "what was he doing", would destroy the mystique thats been with us for over thirty years now.
Prometheus does reveal a lot more as to who the "engineers" are, but by building on that information it posits larger questions of their origins, their motives. You get your answers, but you also retain the mystery, you get your cake and you can eat it into the bargain.
Also by way of a friendly rejoinder, to the Play customer who wrote "laughable", i would never try to convince anyone that a film falls or rises on a critics opinions.
I had to take issue with the comment, "Check any critic review, and you'll see they agree", well i did on, amongst others, Rotten Tomatoes , it seems that one hundred and eighty two, out of two hundred and fifty critics, including, but not limited to, The New Yorker, LA Times, USA today and Rolling Stone rated it, certified fresh and The Sunday Times suppliment has placed it in the, pick of the week column for the last four weeks.
As i said, this doesnt guarantee quality, but in direct response to your statement, they sort of are critics.
