Superb, a ray of light , in an Ocean of cgi dross.

Having written a couple of online reviews for Prometheus, i'm running low on positive adjectives.
Ridley has crafted a film of such superlative standards, that it really throws very many recent summer "blockbusters" into a rather unflattering light. Heres a film which capitalises on the ambiguities offered in Alien, but isnt interested in being just another monster movie, (wisely so because Alien is impossible to top in that respect), instead its an ideas movie.
It asks you, even forces you to consider the ideas its putting forward, who are we ?, why are we here ? and it urges you to ponder these questions by rationing out its revelations and yes, by only obliquely infererring some of its plot points.
In the age of the spoon fed narrative, Ridley Scott refuses to hand you your answers, he's urging you to read between the lines. If your watching for straight forward thrills and chills, yeah you'll get some of that, but the most rewarding payoff is in where the open ended ideas on offer here lead your imagination.
This, for me, is one of the films best aspects. I was very concerned that outright explanations of "who is the Space Jockey", "what was he doing", would destroy the mystique thats been with us for over thirty years now.
Prometheus does reveal a lot more as to who the "engineers" are, but by building on that information it posits larger questions of their origins, their motives. You get your answers, but you also retain the mystery, you get your cake and you can eat it into the bargain.
Also by way of a friendly rejoinder, to the Play customer who wrote "laughable", i would never try to convince anyone that a film falls or rises on a critics opinions.
I had to take issue with the comment, "Check any critic review, and you'll see they agree", well i did on, amongst others, Rotten Tomatoes , it seems that one hundred and eighty two, out of two hundred and fifty critics, including, but not limited to, The New Yorker, LA Times, USA today and Rolling Stone rated it, certified fresh and The Sunday Times suppliment has placed it in the, pick of the week column for the last four weeks.
As i said, this doesnt guarantee quality, but in direct response to your statement, they sort of are critics.

Prometheus is one of the best recent sci-fi films around. For those who didn't enjoy it, they obviously was expecting it to be like the other alien films. I knew that it was going to be different, its the origin story. You cannot make everyone happy i supose, but i extreamly enjoyed Prometheus and cannot wait for the blu ray steelbook to arrive!!!!! and to see it in 3d.

I loved Alien(s) and couldn't wait to see the latest instalment by Ridley Scott! I almost wet my pants with excitement when I heard this had been released at the cinema!

I was however bitterly disappointed.

Whilst the movie was slick and nice to look at the story was absurd, cliched and I HATED all of the characters except maybe Michael Fassbender's.

As a stand alone film I might have given this 3 stars, distinctly average, but worth a watch. As part of the Aliens franchise it is a MASSIVE let down and an absolute waste of time. If you liked Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull you'll probably like this.

  Laughable!

This review will be short and sweet, as I've already wasted over 2 hours of my life watching this film. I'm a huge fan of Ridley Scott, and in particular 1979s Alien.
This film is a joke, the story is full of unexplained holes, characters you couldn't care less about, and laughable scenes. The one and only good thing about it is, visually it looks good. You have people these days saying "it looks great and the 3d was amazing". Who cares? It's 99% about the story and acting, and on this it's terrible.

A 33 year wait, and so so disappointed!

Check any critic review, and you'll see they agree.

I watched this movie with some of my friends last week and we were all blown away by this epic masterpiece. In 3D it was an experience not soon to be forgotten.Probably by far the best sci-fi movie since the first Alien movie by Sir Ridley Scott.Buy it or experience it in 3D in a theatre near you!

Absolutely fantastic! Loved it, can't wait for the release

Went and saw this in IMAX 3D a couple of nights ago and loved it. I suggest you watch Ridley's Alien (1979) beforehand to recognise the possible links between the two. A must for sci-fi and Ridley Scott fans :)

  Great things have small beginnings.

So it's finally arrived one of the most hyped films in years of one of the greatest Sci-fi saga's ever ( apart from the fourth entry and the trashy AVP spin-offs) The film's story has been top secret since putting pen to paper so is this Alien origin story worth the wait?
The answer is a massive YES! but a word of warning for those expecting a "Bug Hunt" will be very disappointed as although Prometheus fits into the Alien universe perfectly as it answers so many questions of the Alien origin and also our own with many surprises, it's an Alien movie in DNA only. Prometheus is much more than an addition to the franchise as it sets things up for sequels and managers to take the series into a totally different direction.
The film is not perfect as although the main characters are well written some of the others are left in the shadows and have victim written all over them. It can also be said that the film is a bit too self important, but the ambition themes and ideas the film brings to the screen surpass any of the few niggles. The film is a body horror as elements take over out of our control and you fully understand the predicament the crew are in. The sets amaze and the reverlations are truly jaw dropping all leading to a gloopy and satisactory ending.... or should that be beginning?
Prometheus is not as good as Alien or Aliens, but is a very rewarding addition that washes the bad taste of Alien Resurrection out of the mouth. See this film on the largest screen possible.
