The impressionistic story of a Texas family in the 1950s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Directed by Terrence Malick.

Mallicks Masterpiece - Not Everyone Cup Of Tea

| | See all trevsaid's reviews (6)

Malicks most recent project is the Tree of Life winner of the Palme DOr at Cannes and a project that he had been harbouring for a long time and many could argue that he has been possibly building up to with his slow evolution of films that predate this. His debut feature 1972s Badlands is a by far the most easily digestible of all of his movies The Tree Of Life being the most obscure. As his movies progress they get somewhat more soaked in his own style and themes which the majority of movie goers find repellent.

Dont expect this to be a run of the mill Brad Pitt film this is Mallicks movie and is lethargic dreamy and the insert in the films middle features excellent effects and beautiful imagery than art house film fans may love but many will find too unconventional and long winded to enjoy.

 Mmm

Top 100 Music Reviewer

As per the only previous review I agree this isn't a run of the mill Brad Pitt film nor Sean Penn for that matter (less seen) but I do agree the imagery is sometimes stunning to behold. In truth that's about as much as I can say in a positive way about the movie!!

There will be people out there who will appreciate it for what it is and I get the general motive of the movie but from an entertainment spectacle it wasn't for me. I don't think I could sit through it again!! Generally I think you might be able to watch it but doubt you would want to own it!! It just never really got going for me albeit it promised on occasion!! Mmm..... Its deep!!
