Yet again the third movie in the series adds more originality to the popular growing franchise, this movie is more gritty and has a darker tone than the others and adds something new to the series with a hybrid Alien, the cast is great, the story is very good and the movie has a fantastic ending, not as thrilling as the ending to Aliens but is still pretty cool. If youre a massive sci-fi fan than this is a must.
Alien 3 was always bound to split the fans opinion.
Those who wanted another gun blazing bug hunt would hate it. But you have to take into consideration how the film was butchered in the editing process. Director David Fincher walked off the project in the end and 20th Century cut some of the best bits of the film so way back in 1992 the cinema cut was actually a unfinished project. Having actors with all shaven heads did not help to relate to the characters and parts almost left on the cutting room floor just showed nervious hands at work. Although the cinema cut did have more pace you need to see the extended cut also available on the DVD/Blu Ray Quadrilogy. Although on the DVD version the sound in parts is off and distorded, Fincher's brave vision is fully restored on Blu Ray.
ALIEN 3 EXTENDED CUT is a far superior version that flushes the characters out and has plot strands re-inserted including the chest burster coming out of a carcus of an Ox instead of the dog, the alien being captured and then released by Golic (who just disappered in the cinema cut) and a better understanding of Wearvers and Charles Dance's relationship. Even the ending is better with Ripley meeting her fate but without holding onto the infant Queen Alien. The film is sombre and this is to it's benefit as Alien and Aliens offered hope Alien 3 is the bleakest of the series and is the equivalent of a gravestone being pelted with rain as it's stripped away of any optimism. Some didn't like that, but although it's not quite as good as Alien and Aliens it still is a fitting conclusion to what should have been Ripley's swan song, and if you compare it to the terrible Alien Resurrection Alien 3 is a work of genius.
