Uniformly excellent acting around a very controversial and difficult topic makes for a film which in no way (as another reviewer points out) is an easy watch but one which has an impact and a lasting memory on anyone who does watch it.
Tilda Swinton is brilliant as Eva, the mother of Kevin. Her only sson who has done something completely shocking and horrific (and perhaps best not spoiled here) leaving his mother in the aftermath to try and comprehend how it could have happened, and whether or not she herself bears any role.
Tilda Swinton really should have gotten at the very least a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her work here but notwithstanding that all the performances are exceptional, including Ezra Miller as Kevin himself.
A difficult watch to be sure..........but a worthwhile one.
amazing acting, amazing direction, and why tilda swinton never won an oscar is yes amazing.
An outstanding film albeit dark, disturbing and uncomfortable to watch. Enjoying this film is tough and unlikely - but being moved by it is undoubted. It flits back and forth along a timeline which extends over years but really encapsulates the emotions (mostly that of hatred and despair) on display. Whilst at first it is difficult to comprehend exactly what is what, the film quickly begins to tie up the loose ends and places you directly in the centre of a maternal nightmare. Tilda Swinton is captivating in her performance whilst young Ezra Miller is haunting. Uncomfortable but essential viewing.
We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) is a drama starring Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller and John C Reilly.
This is a dark and provocative drama dealing with a controversial subject. It is not an easy movie to watch and at times I found myself frustrated with the characters but it is also at times captivating and engrossing.
The acting is first rate. Even though pretty much all the characters are unlikeable the actors do great stuff. Swinton in particular is a tough character to like but she does a terrific job.
The main problem I had with this movie is that I found myself frustrated with the characters and many times the parents in particular are very annoying because of their handling of the kid.
This is though an important movie and well worth a watch. Just do not expect to like what you see.
