Sixteen-year-old Jamie (Lucas Pittaway) longs for an escape from the violence that surrounds him in Adelaides northern suburbs. His salvation arrives in the form of John (Daniel Henshall), a charismatic man who unexpectedly comes to his aid.

However, as events occur around him, including the disappearance of several people, Jamie begins to harbour deep suspicions about John and his motivations. When the truth is finally revealed, Jamies hopes of happiness are threatened by both his loyalty for, and fear of, his father figure - John Bunting, Australia's most notorious serial killer.

 IT'S NOT A PRETTY PICTURE!

We have all seen the advertisements on TV of "Come to Australia for your holidays life it's pardise in the land of oz!"...... well there's a flip side to this and Snowtown is it!
Based on the Bodies in barrels murders committed in 1998 by John Bunting and cohorts, Snowtown shoots in real locations (Just north of Adelaide) with actual residents. Bunting, brilliantly played by Daniel Henshall, is a truly terrifying presence and the crimes are sometimes recreated obliquely, sometimes protractedly are punishing to watch. But Justin Kurzel's debut is most impressive at painting a very grim portrait of a community ravaged by poverty, drugs, violence and behind closed doors abuse of the worst nature. This is the toughest Oz offering since The Boys, Snowtown also shares themes with the outstanding Animal Kingdom.
It's a very tough film to watch, as the grimness realy digs deep under the skin and it's a film that has the overall effect of being hit by a sledge hammer as after viewing you feel you'll need a bath to scrum away the grime of what you have just watched, and although the close door ending is uncompromising it's the excellent performances by the leads that linger just as much as the actual shocking facts.
See if you like......
Animal Kingdom.
The Slap.
Henry A Portait Of a Serial Kiler.
Jeremy Kyle.

 Chilling

Comparable to Tyrannosaur, Snowtown is one of the darkest films I have ever seen. The cast is excellent, and the tone is chilling-apt for one of the most notorious killings Australia has ever seen. Cannot recommend this one highly enough and really looking forward to it coming out on DVD.

A decent film, let down by a slow pace and it leaves too much to the imagination. It also (spoiler coming) does not tell you how the killers where caught,or if the main guy was disturbed or just an over zealous viglante. Its definitely not needed on bluray.as there is nothing you will benefit from in higher res

 A must-see

Visceral, shocking and fantastically engaging. The tone of the film is awkward throughout making it an uneasy watch, the performances are spot on and it will stay with you for a long time after. Reason to buy the Blu-Ray: Currently cheaper than the DVD by a tenner. Not needed in HD though as it's quite a rough and ready image quality anyway.
