...That's what it says on the box.
45 mins in and I'm thinking I've been sent the wrong film.

There must be something in the McDonagh brothers background that's given them both a heavy and hilariously funny sense of humour as this black comedy from the brother of the writer/director of 'In Bruges' is even more outrageous in places!

When his small local beat is invaded by an FBI officer tracking drugs (played by Don Cheadle), Brendan Gleeson's Garda finds his ways clashing with the American's ways while it seems that a hefty dose of drugs is about to come into the area. Can these two maybe find a way to put at stop to them!

If you were easily offended by 'In Bruges' then I wouldn't suggest watching this but if you can work with a film that takes potshots at pretty much most things then even though the basic plot is fairly ordinary, the laughs here are at times genuinely side-splitting and briliantly acted by both Cheadle and Gleeson.

  A Gem Of A Movie.

The Guard (2011) is a comedy drama starring Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle, Liam Cunningham and Mark Strong.

This is a very funny movie with a sharp script and terrific performances from the cast. Gleeson gives a career best performance as confrontational and crotchety police officer Gerry Boyle.

There is also great support from Cheadle as an untight fish out of water FBI Agent. Mark Strong is also on fine form and steals many of the scenes.

Writer/director John Michael McDonagh weaves the right mix between drama, action and comedy. His script is razor sharp and very funny. Gleeson found himself nominated for a Golden Globe for this performance and if there is any justice an Oscar nomination could follow.

Brilliant "un-pc" Cops & Robbers comedy

There are those for whom this film will cause offence within the first 10 minutes. If this happens switch it off, its not for you. However, if you believe that when something is funny, regardless of who it offends its still funny, then I whole heartedly recommend this film. Gleeson and Cheadle are excellent as the leads whose culture and opinions of how to do their respective jobs differs as much as chalk and cheese. Gleeson thinks and acts in a straight line regardless of whose toes or opinions he steps on (including the IRA and at least half the Irish Guarda). Cheadle is a career cop who believes in sensitivity and not upsetting anyone with awkward truths.
See it through to the end and be pleased that you did. Don't make up your mind half-way through, you will only be disappointed.
