Lovely film and just had to have the deluxe edition - was not sure at first because I like dubs in my ghibli collection and sales page only states having English Subs but if this is putting anyone else off; it DOES have English dubs! Great buy for any age.
I've been a huge fan of Studio Ghibli for years but recently have their work to be lacking when compared to their earlier material. Luckily Arrietty seems to be reversing that trend. The animation on this is bright and vivid and is one of the best looking films they've done for years. The voice acting is good and the film moves a long at a good pace. It doesn't quite bring out the level of emotion of Grave of the Fireflies and lacks the action of some of their more action-packed releases but is never the less a vast improvement on Tales of Eathsea and Ponyo.
If you're a Studio Ghibli fan you're unlikely to be disappointed.
This movie was alot better compaired to Tales of Earthsea but I feel like they could have done SO much more to make it as exciting as Princess Mononoke had been. But all in all it was well made and the music in it is very good and I'll defo watch it at least another 8 more times this month :D
Undoubtedly the best looking Ghibli film so far released on Blu-ray, the artwork is crystal clear and up to their usual high standards. Unfortunately the story itself is a bit of let-down, with little in the way of magic or adventure and feels weak in comparison to previous Ghibli efforts like Spirited Away or Mononoke. I haven't read the original story so don't know how it compares, but the film's marketing pitched the film as being about the friendship between Arriety and the young boy and again here it falls a little flat. By the end of the movie the two are little more than mere acquaintances, leaving what should have been an emotional ending feeling a little hollow. This is slightly frustrating as the story itself sets up several plot points which could easily have been developed further, but instead were basically forgotten about giving the impression that this was something of a missed opportunity. Overall this is a decent family film with beautiful artwork and animation, but it could have been much more.
