the film tells us the story of how 'sam childers' transformed his life from a villian to become a 'hero' in a far off land.
it starts with his release from prison, his family whilst he was serving time had turned to the church for comfort, and in fact had found 'faith'
'sam' now released seems to want to pick up where he had left off risking a further jail term, however his family, now deeply religous persuades him to join them at a 'service'
'sam' finds unexpectantly the service and baptism of comfort, he begins to turn his life around, even starting up a business.
in a dream, 'sam' believes that 'god' has directed him to build a church for their community.
whilst watching a news program, he is drawn to the plight of the people in 'sudan' and 'northern uganda' where the people were being slaughtered by a revolutionary, rouge army leaving thousands of young children orphaned.
what follows is the remarkable story of 'sam childers' crusade to protect as many of the children as possible and build them a safe enviroment to live in.
the sights he saw after an attack leads him to take up arms against the evils of the terrorist organisation.
how will he balance his values between his 'loving' home life and what he see's as his purpose in life.
what can i say....it really is a good and inspirational movie......enjoy
When i first heard about this movie i was eager to go and watch this movie on the big screen. However upon reading various reviews i was rather put off and I was expecting this to be another typical 'Hotel Rwanda' style movie which in my opinion Have been overdone.
I was wrong totally different and there is no winner and a definite hero at the end of this movie... Butler's acting is also unforgettable... He should have been at least nominated at the oscars for this!!!
It may sound like a Grindhouse movie or a sequel to Hobo with a Shotgun, but Machine Gun Preacher is a very worthy and effecting movie. Gerard Butler has God and some heavy artillery on his side in this fact based account of a reformed ex-con who decides his true calling is to build an orphangae in the war-torn Sudan. But it's easier said than done, the local militia forcing this ex-biker to use their tactics against them to stop his charges becoming brutalised child soldiers. At times the film does lay on the struggle a little thick as young orphans are kept being pushed to the from off the drama, as for those of us who watch the news or read the paper not just for the sport, we know what horrors are still going on. But this does not stop this from being hard hitting and at times quite upsetting, as the film tries to balance it's righteous moral indignation with some well staged bouts of bloodshed, Also after way too many soppy rom-coms it's great to see Gerard Butler land a role he can really sink his teeth into.
This is a very worthy movie that should open peoples eyes and although things are tough in our country, you end up understanding how much we take for granted.
Watch the end credits as the film thows a final sucker punch with real video camera footage of the struggles they face on a daily basis.
