I have both seen the film AND read the book, and I have to say that I loved this film!
Those of us who has read the book knows that it's filled with humour, and eventhough the subject is rascism, I see it well written in an elegant way with subtle funny parts.
(I have to say, I'm not sure I understand what the other person posting a review means exactly, since he/she first thinks it's too fluffy and sentimental for a drama, but then says that it's too much of a comedy...*confused*)
This is a film that was meant to show that life can change to the better with some inspiration from people around you.
The Help is a drama starring Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain.
This movie has earned a lot of praise and awards but personally I feel it is overrated and not nearly as good as you would expect. The acting is certainly very good but the movie itself feels too sentimental and fluffy to register as a drama.
Stone proves that she is a leading lady and Davis and Spencer steal all the acting plaudits with terrific performances but director Tate Taylor struggles to balance the racial with the wimsical comedy.
The Help lacks any hard hitting drama and instead attempts to market itself towards a fluffy comedy drama aimed primarily at women. Its a real shame because the cast are terrific but the story needed to be told more seriously.
