I was very unsure of this film when it came out at the cinema, I never went to see it it was one of those i'll wait til it comes out for the home type films. But then i started reading reviews of it and the american bluray release and how they was all saying its really good in terms of film, story, visuals, sound and 3D and i was getting excited for it. And they was right its a great film a real good heart warming, feel good arty film. Picture quality is flawless, the DTS:MA is great and clean and the 3D is amongst the best there is creating perfect depth to each frame of the image. The only problem i found was on a normal non 3D player it takes ages to load or not at all with a message saying no 3DTV detected if not directly connected to one. I discovered because i dont have a 3D amp yet i cant run both 3D and HD sound at same time,so when i want to watch a film in 3D i have to disconnect the player from directly in the amp and plug into the tv and just a optical for regular DVD dolby D. But when it was in the amp and i wanted to watch the film in 2D in DTS:MA i got the message and the disc wouldnt start its like the disc has some odd program on it, it just wouldnt run the disc in 2D it thought it was 3D even though it wasnt directly connected to the tv. So i had to trick the player and connect it to the tv get to the menu select 2D there then reconnect it back to the amp to run it in 2D and DTS:MA
i usually watch about 5 new movies a week from all different genres and countries with all different budgets and production. this had it all: top director, superb production, outstanding cast bla bla bla. however, when i watched it all i really thought was long, boring and probably one of the most over-hyped films ever. scorsese made some of my favourite movies of all time, but i have no idea why he made this. or why a film set in paris had only english accents. the film was not what it seemed, but that wasnt a good thing. overall i was very disappointed. the only good thing i would say is that its visually stunning and the cast is solid.
'hugo' becomes an orphan,he lives in a clock tower in a paris railway station, needing to steal food to live.
the public are unaware that the clock-keeper is no longer winding the stations clocks but young 'hugo'
he searches for a message he believes his father a clockmaker has left for him.
the local lawman is on the trail of this petty-thief, however 'hugo's' life is set to change when he befriends 'isobelle'
a colourful family movie with a touching tale of one boys journey that also changes a former movie-makers fortunes bringing a new beginning for himself and 'isobelles' family.
great visual content throughout.
Hugo is a sweet drama starring Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Lee, Emily Mortimer and Ray Winstone.
Martin Scorsese directs this movie and the craft used is the work of a true master. The film looks beautiful and its clear Scorsese loved recreating the works of Georges Melies.
The cast are very good (particulary Ben Kingsley) and the story has a charm about it. The main problem with this movie though is that its story is too grown up for kids to enjoy while adults may be too cynical to really enjoy the experience.
Hugo is a beautiful work of art and Scorsese's love of the source material is clear but personally I found it difficult to connect to this movie. As a fan of Scorsese's I found myself longing for his more adult work.
AVOID,film is boring, nothing happens for the whole film, yes it looks brilliant but it's still boring, even my kids hated it,Scorcese should stick to gangster films.
