The sound era was barely two years old when Lewis Milestone unleashed this extraordinary masterpiece on an unsuspecting public. For one of the abiding memories you take from 'All Quiet' is the constant bombardment of artillery; it really helps you understand how some of these poor young volunteers into the German army in the First World War went crazy. Surprisingly graphic for its age, it's full of numerous moments which linger in the mind, of which its hopeless ending is probably the most powerful.
This has been immaculately restored on Blu ray for Universal's 100th anniversary and this is the version you should be checking out because the restoration looks amazing for a film that's over 80 years old.
