In the summer of 1982 two aliens went head to head in the cinema. The people chose the little lost alien and cast the nasty shape shifting beast into the cold, it was hated by the critics and this is where it remained until its video release. 25 years later this film has gained the classic status that the film is.
To be honest the film has aged far better than E.T. The bleak cold setting is superb. This film reminds us that at his prime John Carpenter was the master of horror, and this is his best movie. Its also a sorry reminder of how the once master of terror has now slipped into "B" movie hell! This film is a paranoid classic and can stand up to Alien as the best Sci-Fi horrors ever put to film. The real star is the incredible special effects, all old school, and made way before C.G.I. The films tag line is trust no one, but trust me buy this movie now and relive the terror!
The Thing 1982 is a stone cold classic!
*****
You know what I loved about the original 1982 John Carpenter's classic was the theme tune BO... BO-BO....BO-BO.
The good thing about This Thing, not that Thing but the new thing is it's a prequel to the old Thing, so the new thing is set before the old Thing that was in fact a remake of an older Thing....... if you follow me. So you don't have had to have seen the other Things to have seen this Thing.
Almost the same amount of tension of the 1982 Thing is present as it plays up on the whole anti-trust as the Thing thaws from it's icy tomb to kill and duplicate any of the scientist on the Antarctic station. like the 1982 Thing this Thing is also set in the early 80's and mostly is a success with the retro feeling, but unlike The Thing this Thing uses CGI, some is very good, but also some does look fake and resembles something from Resident Evil. The Thing about the 1982 Thing was the brilliant use of make-up and puppets it gave us something real to look at and I guess the 1982 Thing has a leg up over this Thing.
But the film is faithful to its 1982 movie and has great moments of suspense with a fantastic closing sequence that leaves this Thing with the opening to that Thing. This is a very good prequel that has full respect to the original Thing.... that was set after this Thing.
And if you're a fan of The Thing you should definitely see this Thing.
On a down side I can see confusion when renting or purchasing this Thing, you'll end up ringing the supplier complaining that they sent you The Thing but not The Thing, but the other Thing, you wanted The Thing but not this Thing.... The wrong Thing and also it would look confusing in you DVD/ Blue ray collection having both The Thing 1982 and The Thing 2011 that's set in 1982...... It's a funny old thing. The you would think that with The Thing 1982 gaining a massive cult following would have made the prequel a sure thing at the box-office but the fact is that The Thing 2011 actually performed even worse, but that's not to be taken as a reflection of the quality of this prequel.
****
This is a great collection and mabe the 2011 prequel will never get the high regard of the 1982 it's still a must buy for any horror/ sci-fi fan.
The Blu Ray transfer on both movies is excellent that really does bring out the icy blue tones and show off the oustanding effect .

Saw this film in the cinema on release day and was very impressed, i have the original, love it, went to the cinema with little belief this film would impress if the visuals were'nt right.... but they are!! You actually get the skin crawling feeling and cringing on your edge of the seat with how disgusting the creatures are. it helps explain alot about the first film and ends where the 1982 version starts.
great film buy yours now.
A fantastic masterpeice you will watch time again and still keep you on the edge of your seat!
I read a negative review on the 2011 movie, but boy do i disagree! i absolutely loved it. The sound and picture is great too, with some great extras
