Dune - Great Movie BUT Blu Ray let down

| | See all TedBear75's reviews (2)

The movie, storyline, effects are 5-star BUT the transfer to Blu Ray loses 2 stars. It is abysmal! The colours are washed out and it is clear that the transfer uses the DVD material from the earlier Prism release. There is a 'flickering' effect in some portions of the film - exactly in the same place as the older DVD. Case in point, the arrival of the Guild ship at the start of the film. As it lowers into the emperorer's port, the small lights surrounding the other ports in the area flicker - very off-putting against the darker background. I purchased the Blu Ray in the hope it would reflect the older Thorn-EMI VHS edition which is poor by DVD/Blu Ray standards yet pristine in terms of it's transfer. It only goes to show that, unless the blu ray is a remastered version, any movie title will fail quality wise if the original material is poor to begin with. Surely the companies concerned should be taking this into consideration before they issue blu ray releases of back catalogue titles. A lazy attitude to quality considerations only enforces the view that the companies are after a quick buck - and are unlikely to change unless the customer lets them know. Don't put up with poor quality products - after all, they tell us their products are supposed to be better than 'knock-offs'. D-, Universal, Indi, Prism. Could do a LOT better!

 Very poorly mastered from DVD.

Picture quality, see Tedbear75 review.
Not remastered from original film print, but from upscaled from DVD.

Sound quality appalling, very thin with no LF detail at beginning of film.
Low quality HF dominates first part of the film.

Strangely, sound improves during movie. Go Figure.

If you have seen this film at the pictures or on VHS, Laser Disc or DVD, DO NOT BUY.
Re. John Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg ,you will be VERY DISAPPOINTED.

You have been warned.

 Try the French version

I haven't seen this new copy of the film so can only go along with what other reviewers have reported about picture and sound quality. I've had a French blu-ray of Dune for a few years now and can only say good things about it. picture quality is the best I've seen of this film and the sound is DTS HD 5.1
