Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) joins a Norwegian scientific team in Antarctica that has discovered an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, and an organism that seems to have died in the crash. When an experiment frees the alien, a shape-shifting creature with the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. Paranoia soon spreads like an epidemic as they're infected, one by one, and a thrilling race for survival begins...

The Thing is a prelude to John Carpenter's classic 1982 film of the same name.

Not as good as the original

Having watched the original The Thing I was looking forward to this as I heard it was a prequl. The film starts off promising when they unearth The Thing but unfortunately doesnt keep that level throughout the film. I found myself feeling like id seen this film before.Even though this is a prequel you cant help but feel that its a re-make at the same time and with no Kurt Russell thats not gonna go well. The plot is very similar o the original without the great charachters. The effects are ok nothing special they could have certianly been better. The film isnt terrible and if you are intrested enough in the story of the original you will get some pleasure out of this. At the same time if you havent seen the original again you will take some pleasure as you will not be familiar with the storyline. 2.5 / 5

I am a massive fan of the original Thing and I too was apprehensive about this movie but I got it anyway. All I can say is WOW. You can put this movie on to watch and put the original straight on after it and you won't be able to tell that was a 2011 movie. They have gone all out to recreate sets in this one that we see in the original. The ice block in the basement, the norwegian camp inside and out, the vehicles, the look and feel of the original is all there. No over the top CGI, mainly puppetry. It even shows the creation of the monster we see with the two faces from the original film. It is suspenseful and claustrophobic with good use of the original music. The end sets up perfectly with the opening of the original too. AMAZING!

 Good fun

I love the original film so waited for this with a little trepidation.
I think it links in very well with the original film and makes a very good prequel about the origin of the thing. There are a few similarities that make you feel they have also gone for a remake but these are only a few places. some good effects, acting isn't nearly as awful as you'd expect.
Looks and sounds very good on blu ray.
If you love the original then give this a go. I doubt youd be disappointed.

A well thought out prelude to the 1982 classic

This is a well thought out film which links flawlessly into the 1982 film. It has humour, suspense, and great effects. Is it really nessessary? No, not really; but it is a nice companion.
Well worth a look.
