Can't stop the signal...

Beloved television cult director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel) makes a spectacular first foray onto the big screen with Serenity, the cinematic adaptation of his wildly popular but short-lived sci-fi series, Firefly. A mix of space western, comedy, and drama, Serenity follows captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ragtag crew as they trade their way around the edges of civilized society. Of particular interest are two passengers they take on, Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher and Summer Glau), a brother and his telepathic sister on the run from the corrupt governing Alliance. As notorious former members of the anti-Alliance opposition, Mal and his crew make it difficult for Simon and River to stay hidden. Everything goes completely awry when a government assassin is sent to retrieve River. As Mal is forced to choose between his close-knit crew and the brother and sister newcomers, it becomes apparent that River harbors both a dangerous secret and astounding fighting powers, and Mal decides that discovering the truth about what she knows might just be worth his time.

Many of the film's action sequences revolve around Summer Glau's martial arts skills in her portrayal of River. Glau prepared for her role with Hong Kong stuntwoman Ming Lu, as well as stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and Hiro Koda, and as a result performed nearly all the stuntwork herself. In addition to the stellar stunts, realistic graphics, and an often haunting score, the film's actors display a rare chemistry that brings viewers both into their lives and into a possible version of humanity's future.

Although it may now be 7 years old 'Serenity' remains a cracking sci-fi action film which takes off from shortly after where the 2002 TV series 'Firefly' left off.

As the mystery of River Tam's fractured mind comes to the fore, and the secret she holds that threatens the ruling Alliance, creator Joss Whedon fashions a thrilling adventure yarn with wit, great visuals and terrific dialogue - with a couple of shocks along the way for long time fans - as the crew of 'Serenity' work to uncover the truth and elude the powerful Alliance in the process.

This new Steelbook edition has beautiful artwork on the cover, and the title is de-bossed for a nice texture but the overall steelbook itself to me felt just a little less sturdy than some of the others I have in my collection. Nothing too worrying at the moment, but something I thought worth noting.

Blu-ray picture clarity is really good as well, and there's a hearty bunch of bonus material (some from the original DVD) in the form of commentaries, featurettes and an Alliance Database to get you up to speed on the backstory to the film in case you're new to it!

But if you are new to it - watch out! You'll have ordered up 'Firefly' by the time your done here!

Serenity is one awesome sci-fi with a brilliant story and a perfect cast, based on Joss Whedons amazing TV series firefly which only ever saw one series before it was cancelled, Serenity basically takes the whole series and gives it closure with a great ending, all the original cast is back and all with a better budget, this is a gem of a film and a must for any fan of cult classic sci-fi movies this is certainly one of them.

 Excellent Sci-Fi film

Brilliant film - witty/funny/exciting etc etc. Its Joss Whedon so expect quality. Great follow up to the Firefly series. Very good steelbook too - really good looking and high quality with lots of extras on the blu-ray. Recommended!

This is one of the best Sci-fi films of the last decade and it's from the maker of Buffy, Angel and not forgetting The Avengers director Joss Whedon. This is an action packed movie which is a must see. Moreover this steelbook is brilliantly made. With great colours and artwork it is completed with some debossing to the title! Buy it now while you can!

not bad but no classic sci fi.

I didnt know anything about this film but saw the reviews and really fancied it. I do love the occasional sci-fi and in many aspects the film dont disapoint. from the effects which are top draw to the acting which was good but did leave me laughing at them not with them at times. however it does carry a sense of humour through the film and doesnt take itself too seriously which is good. i did find the action a little disapointing seen as this ultimate weapon hardly gets her hands dirty apart from one scene part way through and when she does finally turn right at the end you dont even see it. All in all its a good watch but certainly isnt a film up there with any of my favourates or even that type of film that left me wanting to watch it again, not any time soon anyways.
