I agree with all the other revues not because I am a John Wayne fan,
but having seen all the old classic westerns also most of the modern westerns I also believe this is the best western ever made, and Wayne should have got an Oscar for his portrayal of Ethan also in Blu- Ray you cannot fault the transfer of this 50 year old film it is just breathtaking.

searching for quality the searchers blue ray is amasing

One of the greatest and most influential films of the western genre and of cinema in general has more than passed any test of time that can be levied against it. After the murder of his family, and the kidnap of his niece goes on a journey to find her and return her, while avenging the murders. A journey which will take many years and change him and the nephew he sets out on the long journey with. But with such an old film, how does this Blu-ray stack up?

Well, Blu-ray fans really have little to worry about. The transfer on this edition is absolutely superb. The magnificent vistas and landscape photography simply comes to life and in places it could look like it was shot yesterday in HD. Colours etc all come to vibrantly and if you don't already have the film on any format then Blu-ray is the way to get it.

Extras are also plentiful and interesting, with commentary, documentaries, trailets etc exploring the film, it's director John Ford and other aspects. An excellent package all in, and one deserving of being in anyone's collection.

  Absolutely sparkling

I'm not a great western fan, only owning a select few,but the BD version of The Searchers is stunning. The visuals are fantastic, with better picture quality than some recently released titles, amazing for its age,the restorers must take full credit for a dazzling visual experience. As for the sound, although in mono, still sounds great in HD.The story of a search for kidnapped family members, it left me wondering what other Wayne classics are out there waiting for me.If you love westerns, buy it now you wont be disappointed.

The Searchers is a Great Find on Blu-ray...you'll be amazed!

The stage is set for one if not the best scenery shots of the Great West in this 12th collaboration of John Wayne (The Duke) and John Ford (The Director)....Cue Ethan Edwards (Wayne) a hard nosed racist hard man of the Confederate Army and the wild who after his relatives house is burnt to the ground with Comanches goes on a trail to find his final living niece with the help of Ward Bond (The Preacher). Wayne portrays his role ruthlessly at first only to mellow as time passes. Look out for a young Natalie Wood.
The Serachers is absolutely sublime on blu-ray ...you will find it extremely difficult to believe that this film was made almost 52 years ago as the colours sharpness and sheer magnificence of the outdoor scenic photography is sheer brilliance of high defintion this is guaranteed....A great Western on a Great Blu-ray and very very highly recommended...

Is this film one of the greatest Westerns ever made? Probably! Is this Blu-ray transfer one of the best there is? Yes it really is!

John Wayne's classic Western looks amazing on Blu-ray, and can be enjoyed again as if you were watching a whole new film. The picture quality is out of this world, the story is as gritty and frightening as it ever was. This tale of what boils-down to be "racism" is one of John Fords greatest films, and a film that every fan of cinema should own in their collection.

John Wayne is probably at his peak in this movie, and for those who say Wayne can't act, watch this and be proved wrong. It has some of the most stirring scenes ever written in film and stills pulls-strong today.

As for the HD qualitys. The picture is an amazing transfer that makes the film look like it was released just this year... It's just that breath-taking. As for the sound, it was decided to leave in the original mono soundtrack, but this still sounds great in HD. There are loads of extras too, which add to the whole experience.

If you don't own it, you're no film-buff!

:) Mark

  Sensational Blu Ray

Viewing The Searchers on Blu Ray has been a sensational experience. The picture us clear, colourful and nearly perfect - it even gives the landscape an almost 3- dimensional quality. Sensational, one of my best Blu ray Discs, I never thought it could work that well with old films.
A definite "Must Have..."

  The greatest western film EVER!

| | See all robbersdog's reviews (21)

Not only the best western film ever made, but one of the great films of the past 50 years. John Wayne's performance is astonishing, he was never better than this. The 50th anniversary edition was good, the Blu-ray version surpasses even that. Amazing to see a 50 year old film looking so good; the transfer sparkles, the colours, (it was originally shot in VistaVision), are lush and almost 3 dimensional, bringing to life the magnificent scenery of Monument Valley. A film of great visual beauty, with excellent performances from all the cast. This is a film to see and see again.
