From Mel Gibson, director of the Passion Of The Christ and the Academy Award-winning Braveheart (Best Director, Best Picture, 1995) comes the thrilling historical epic Apocalypto. This intense, nonstop action-adventure transports you to an ancient Central American civilization, for an experience unlike anything you've ever known. In the twilight of the mysterious Mayan culture, young Jaguar Paw is captured and taken to the great Mayan City, where he faces a harrowing end. Driven by the power of his love for his wife and son, he makes an adrenaline-soaked, heart-racing escape to rescue them and ultimately save his way of life. Filled with unrelenting action and stunning cinematography, Apcalypto is an enthralling and unforgettable film experience.

This is what Blu-Ray is all about

It took me a while to get around to seeing this film, and after seeing some good reviews about it I decided to 'take a chance' and get it on Blu-Ray. All I can say is WOW! If you are having friends round and you want to show them what HD is all about, this is the one. The scenes in the forest are just like looking out your window. The detail, the colour, its just so like being there. The story is great too, from the opening thrill of the hunt, the humour of the tribesman, the quiet before the storm of what is about to happen to them really involves you in their village life. And, don't worry too much about the subtitles, you hardly notice them. Great film, with an HD picture to die for!

Will have you checking your history - Magnificent and brutal

Again more Gibson controversy for an overly violent film. But as human's, our history is literally soaked in blood. And in the ancient Myan world of around the 18th century, this is no exception.

From the opening scene of the myan group of hunters killing a bore for dinner. It leaves you under no pretense that the camera won't shy away when someone bites the dust.

The HD aspect of this film is astonoshing. Check out the scenes when the captured band of villagers is leds to the ancient myan pyramids. The brilliant white dust of the slaves making the pyramid stones, and the brilliant costumes and colours of the myan leaders look stunning. Its sound is also brutal... From the opening scene the base and fast paced music will sound super charged and keep you gripped. When he leaps from the waterfall the loud rush of water from all around the room puts you right in the water fall.

As a film it is fantastic and will have you checking for historical accuracy. It is filmed in myan language and I was suprised at the depth of the characters and there conversation. I suppose you think of people from 5000 years ago do not have the ability to laugh, have honour or communicate well, but the script is excellent.

The myan's look as authentic as you could wish for. The skin scarring, ear rings and lip rings and tatoo's look brilliant and the head dresses and pyramid's fantastic.

So is it gorey, well yes, very. Some of it a bit Hollywood and pointless, but in reality the violence was a way of life for these people and for us still in this day and age. The human sacrifices, decapitations and ripping out of peoples hearts is not shyed away from. It will have you flinching and wondering how we ever made it to where we are today as humans. But that is Gibson's point I suppose. Yes you could see the story as linear of a man trying to rescue his family. But it is deeper than that. It shows how people believed sacrifice was neccesary. How a small family village life can come to an end by savage deluded warriors, about brotherhood, death and awakening.

Well worth a watch and beautiful in HD you will laugh, cry, gasp in horror, flinch in terror and have your heart beating out your chest with the exciting chase sequences.

 Powerful, Artistic, Alive!

This is one of those films where you cannot move out of your chair for the entire movie. The sound and picture is breathtaking and you really do feel as if you're in south American jungle. The way history has been transferred to screen is nothing short of genius and shows a tremendous sense understanding for how Mayan culture is portrayed.
It also sets off the viewers emotions such as the strong sense of fear at the beginning, hate and of course love for your family and friends.

If 1 word could sum it up, that word would be STUNNING

While a relatively simple plot can be a downfall to many films, Apocalypto benefits greatly due to it's fast paced action and linear story.
A simple tribe is abruptly taken hostage and forced into sacrifice and slavery. One of the lucky members of the captured has escaped and must get back to his family who are trapped in a deep hole they fled to to evade capture they eagerly awaiting his return.
Throughout the film there's plentiful gore, and constant running with tribal music to suit.
Mel Gibson is finding himself as quite a good if not a little controversial director.it's hard to talk about this due to it's simplicity, but with much crisper picture and sound then it's DVD counter part, it's well worth the watch.

 stunning in blu ray

This is the type of film that really shows off what blu ray is all about, the south american jungle looks amazing in this blu ray film and the picture quality is easily up there with the dark knight.

Overall i really enjoyed this film, it was something different to the usual action movies americans produce at the moment. A word of warning though, this film is spoken in mayan so its a movie with subtitles. This didnt bother me as i have watched japanese horrors before with english subtitles but some people do not like to watch a movie in subtitles, and there wasnt any warning with this film that this would be the case.

That aside i would still highly recommend this on blu ray, great storyline and stunning picture in blu ray
