Again more Gibson controversy for an overly violent film. But as human's, our history is literally soaked in blood. And in the ancient Myan world of around the 18th century, this is no exception.
From the opening scene of the myan group of hunters killing a bore for dinner. It leaves you under no pretense that the camera won't shy away when someone bites the dust.
The HD aspect of this film is astonoshing. Check out the scenes when the captured band of villagers is leds to the ancient myan pyramids. The brilliant white dust of the slaves making the pyramid stones, and the brilliant costumes and colours of the myan leaders look stunning. Its sound is also brutal... From the opening scene the base and fast paced music will sound super charged and keep you gripped. When he leaps from the waterfall the loud rush of water from all around the room puts you right in the water fall.
As a film it is fantastic and will have you checking for historical accuracy. It is filmed in myan language and I was suprised at the depth of the characters and there conversation. I suppose you think of people from 5000 years ago do not have the ability to laugh, have honour or communicate well, but the script is excellent.
The myan's look as authentic as you could wish for. The skin scarring, ear rings and lip rings and tatoo's look brilliant and the head dresses and pyramid's fantastic.
So is it gorey, well yes, very. Some of it a bit Hollywood and pointless, but in reality the violence was a way of life for these people and for us still in this day and age. The human sacrifices, decapitations and ripping out of peoples hearts is not shyed away from. It will have you flinching and wondering how we ever made it to where we are today as humans. But that is Gibson's point I suppose. Yes you could see the story as linear of a man trying to rescue his family. But it is deeper than that. It shows how people believed sacrifice was neccesary. How a small family village life can come to an end by savage deluded warriors, about brotherhood, death and awakening.
Well worth a watch and beautiful in HD you will laugh, cry, gasp in horror, flinch in terror and have your heart beating out your chest with the exciting chase sequences.
