Oldboy (Blu-ray)

love this film and had it down as one of the special dvds to upgrade as soon as it came out on bluray but I have to say that I was totally let down by this release. I've not contacted the distributer yet- laziness on my own part - but the PQ is unacceptably poor.
When DVD first launched there were plenty of discs that shipped with just the video transfered onto dvd and I have the feeling this might have just been the dvd transfered onto BD.
If you own the standard def disc already save your money and don't get stung. It was so bad I thought I had bought a pirated version.

Very very disappointed.

This is a review of the US blu-ray (which is region free, the extras disc however comes on a regular region 1 DVD).

This is one of the best movies to come out of Korea over the last 5 years or so (of which there have been quite a few).
Guy gets imprisoned for 15 years without knowing anything of his captor or the reasoning behind his incarceration.
He is then let out and has just 5 days to seek vengeance on whoever was behind his abduction.

Brilliantly shot and directed with a superb leading man in Choi Min-Sik. Plenty of twists and turns and some very bleak and pretty sickening scenes, which wouldn't lend itself very easily to the supposed Hollywood remake (i hope it doesn't get made).

The Blu-ray transfer is a definite step-up from the DVD that i had. There is fair bit of grain and isn't as sharp as i was hoping for but decent nevertheless.
Sound is very good. Korean DTS HD master audio 7.1and DD-EX 5.1.
The bonus disc is also very good and is choc-full of interesting tidbits.

This is a must watch movie for anyone that wants an edgy non-hollywood production. Even if you aren't a fan of foreign movies it should certainly be tasted.

a must watch film even if like me you saw the twist coming

was wondering why this disc comes in at this price but having seen it in the high street - it is bundled with the dvd version in the same box (although not sure how the sticker on it saying "future proof" applies :?)
there's plenty of extras, but nothing more than what the dvd already had.

Oldboy is a crazy film. It is grotesque and beautiful, it sounds weird but if you watch the film you will understand!
This isn't the best looking Blu-Ray but it is a MUST buy!!!
One of the best Korean films around.
Oldboy is in one word crazy, a true cinematic masterpiece.

a film of visual genius and fantastic sound (especially the music) the plot is great too, the only problem is that it is a bit too constructed for it's own good, (think Se7en and the likes of it) when the mastermind behind the crime seem to be almost psychic and can anticipate and steer his victims every move 10 steps ahead. (well, here it's more like 30 steps ahead though) ;)

I doubt this film could have been done in the west, some of the themes and scenes would just not be accepted or work in any case, but I can't speak of it without spoiling the plot, just see it!

only shame about the price and production here. the DVD I have, and if I get a Blu-ray why would I want the DVD even if I did'nt? strange to say the least.. :(

and it would be nice if all the extras and subtitles from the rest of Europe was one it, since these are already avalable on the DVD-versions anyways.
